what do psychiatrists actually do? i am miserable and am willing to try things but i dont even know what they would talk about. are there any good books to get into psychiatry?
>>
First off if you want to be a psychiatrist drop the typical 4chan attitude of feeling like everyone is full of bullshit and you aren't, as you won't go anywhere because of that.

Next practice empathy and listening. Learn how to be genuine in your emotions. True sarcasm may work every once in a while, but if your world is predicated on sarcasm and an autistic person who struggles to communicate with you is trying to be honest, you are going to have issues.

Lastly, fuck thinking everyone is a danger in this world. Let me tell you, there are worst people in this world than those that stand there and appear like they are drooling starring at you. OH GOD HE'S DROOLIN AND LOOKING AT ME. Yeah so what, but you trust worse in your life.

Lastly, do not put the patient's mother against him or the patient against his mother.

Understandably because you are neurotypical I bet you are going to find a flaw in this and use it against me.

Well, they're doctors. So you need to spend seven years at medical school, then another three years speciality training in psychiatry. At that point you'll probably be working in a regular hospital; when someone is brought in who seems to be in an abnormal mental state, or who may have harmed themselves, it'll be your job to check them out and see if they need psychiatric treatment. When you are a bit more experienced you may be able to get work at an actual psychiatric hospital. Most of the major decisions will still be made by the consultant (boss doctor) but you'll be responsible for day to day patient care. You may also see outpatients, and assess them to see if they would benefit from medication or various other forms of medical treatment.

what do you mean? psychiatrists prescribe medication. are you talking about psychologists that provide therapy? actual therapy is to facilitate you consciously figuring things out about yourself + providing support and the therapeutic relationship can help you remodel your relationships with other people in your life
>books
nancy mcwilliams and johnathan shedler.

>Why have you come to me?
Well, I've been having touble with ____
>Tell me about it

[At that point you will do most of the talking. His job is to spot when you just happen to say something that his training tells him will be a useful thing for you to think more about.]
>Tell me a little more about that point.
[Ideally you might not even notice that he is guiding you toward thinking your own way through the issue that brought you there.]
