I have a fake spouse and a fake baby I made up for the sake of fitting in at work. I made a comment about how much I get back on my taxes and now it looks like my fake spouse has been swindling me out of thousands for years lol. What's a good believable excuse on how I cam salvage the reputation of my fake spouse or make it seem like a misunderstanding altogether?

You could say that's the portion you kept after giving her the rest - you let her take care of the taxes.
I don't lie to fit in nor do I try to fit in. It's better to be transparent about your marital status instead of being a fake and a poser.
