My mother got ill and is being moved to a retirement home soon. We lived in public housing but my name was never on the tenancy (been living here all my life as hikkineet), it doesn't look like I can continue living here in the future, even with a power of attorney order.

I've got about $1100 to my name, a house full of stuff including family heirlooms and nowhere to go. I also have to manage the $20,000 worth of debt in my mother's name. I don't think she and I own enough stuff to sell to be able to cover it out of pocket.

So its looking like I'm gonna end up homeless in X amount of weeks, or months. That more depends on if I can get a temporary stay agreement. Where do I go from here? I think I should put my name on the waitlist for public housing myself already, if I can't get my name transferred onto the tenancy. I've got friends but I don't want to rely on them too much, I could ask them to store some stuff and probably that's it. How do I even begin the process of moving a whole household of furniture into something like a storage unit? Should I try to sell some of the stuff in the house (unless its my own belongings, all the money would go into my mother's own account and I can't access that for my own personal needs.) What do I do when I'm actually homeless, as in on the streets? I'm not comfortable with staying in a shelter, just because of the reputation they have for letting violent drug addicts stay there too.

There's a lot of questions and I don't really even know where to start.

They don't care who signs the checks, so as long as they don't find out your mother has left, you can pretend she's still there.

(Remember the sitcom Friends? That's how Monica got her big apartment, by just renewing her grandmother's lease)

You do not. Unless your name is on those papers you really do not. They'll called and harass you, and try to make pay, but if they dont have your signature just ignore.

US law dictates that children are not responsible for paying their parents’ debts. But the debt owner could claim some of the inheritance if there is a nontrivial sum of worth.

This is a situation someone with any amount of drive or ambition would almost never wind up in. Just reading the post makes it apparent he has no intention of work and would rather sleep on the cold ground than perform labor. Your advice is wasted on him

I've already let the public housing people know she's going to be moving into residential care soon.

Because my mother's mental incapacity, I am in charge of her finances at this point. No one has tried to collect the debt yet and its being paid off, just very slowly because she's unironically done that ah dood Sam Hyde thing with them.

You're pretty correct in your appraisal :(
