I'm in my 40s. I'm having panic attacks losing sleep cuz of work. I think I'm evaluating the money I get vs the cost to my mind. I dream about menial, rote work. Like an overnight job at a bakery. I'm debt free, and don't need to worry about retirement, so it's just the time from now til then that I gotta worry about. Not a whole lotta expenses. Would you if you were me?

Take the leap.

In my experience, stress usually comes from not working. When I’m on top of my game and getting things done, I don’t feel stressed at all. But whenever I slip a little and let the work pile up, that’s when I get really stressed. Maybe you need a better daily routine to cope with all of this. Do you do sports? what do you do in your spare time? Are you good at your job?

I'm good at my job. I'm actually up for a promotion as soon as October, my leadership talks about it freely with me. Vidya, cooking, hobbies at home are my things outside of work. I should exercise more but hate sports. I used to work an overnight shift in IT, loved it (I'm in IT now). Used to work in a mailroom and it was the least stressful job I ever had, I miss it, but that was almost 20 years ago.

It should be noted that I'm high functioning autistic, which is partly why the overnight, menial stuff appeals to me. The less I need to talk to people, the better.

Dude, we can switch place anytime..

You WANT TO want to kill yourself? Cuz that's what's going through my head. That death is better than corporate slavery, than losing sleep and panic attacks and constantly thinking about work and the politics and the nepotism and deliverables and deadlines and meetings and reputation and and and. Money isn't everything.

Use the money to buy a sauna and massages, duh.

Okay that wasn't what I said. But being focused on work in a corporate entity and being able to make ends meet, this I wouldn't mind. Try sleeping in your car or lacking a roof to live under and see if you really want manual stuff.. Because a lot of this kind of work will get you exhausted faster than you think.

Working in smaller structures can be fun and interesting though.

Thing is I've done some menial stuff before. Never felt like this on those jobs.

Maybe that's what I need, something smaller. Not a business where my team is 30+ people and the employee count is over 20k (which I know isn't a lot compared to others). Maybe small business...

Small businesses can be cool. You get to be more independent and more flexible than in bigger structures (replace colleagues when needed for instance since it's a smaller boat, and it's easier to learn a little of what others do due to proximity and provided you are not working with complete assholes).

Downfall is economic downturns hit harder and that in very productive periods, there is a lot of stress and pressure and more effort required as it is not as diffused as in bigger companies (burnouts and tensions can happen much more quickly and are less manageable than in bigger structures).

If you really have nothing major stopping you from switching jobs then I say switch!
Life’s too short to be doing a job you don’t give af about. Move to another state! Completely start over

That's why they call it the golden handcuffs, you traded having a life being broke doing mundane tasks at a dead end job for the privilege of dying from a heart attack in a few years.

You already made your money it seems so why the fuck not go back into working a dead end job?
