I realize that if I were to die atm then they would have nothing to remember me by. I keep everything about me inside this laptop and if i'm dead then they'll never know the real me, which would be really sad and probably add to their grief. How do I go about doing this though? Do I just leave my password on a sticky note somewhere? Maybe turn off bitlocker? My brother is the only one that's tech literate but I'm afraid he won't be able to figure out how to use a linux thumb drive to look at windows files. I don't want to compromise my security too much either because obviously I don't want them going through my laptop while I'm alive.

Are you planning to die any time soon? You could slowly open up to them.
>>
FYI I'm not suicidal and never will be, I just don't want to lock my family out of seeing the more vulnerable me after passing.
>>
Your laptop is likely to die long before you do.

I hate google, but if you really care about permanency, you can create a google account, put your important docs/images/movies there, and use their "Inactive Account Manager" to give access to certain people (by their email) if you are inactive for 3 - 18 months. (you choose the timeframe).

Not at all, see >>33674046

Well I don't know. We all lock parts of ourselves away to some people. I don't think it's such a bad thing. I used to not be open with my parents about my political beliefs, and revealing that has led to more conflict. So I'd say be close with them, but realize you don't need to share everything, and they don't need to know everything. Only one person will ever know the true you: yourself. Maybe two, maybe your wife.

>Inactive Account Manager
This isn't exactly what I'm looking for but thank you, I was going to give my passwords in a txt file once they get in but seems like a smoother way of doing so.
>>33674066
I absolutely agree with you but I feel like once we die it won't really matter what we hide about ourselves because it will be inconsequential in the end, and we would be doing our loved ones a favor by "showing" ourselves if that makes any sense. Just to offer them a sense of closure. Idk.
>>
>>33674102
Nobody makes it out alive. There's probably not gonna be a great sense of closure anyways if you die young, and if you live to be old you'll have lots of time to ponder over it. I would say probably don't have your family rummage through your laptop if you die. If you want to show more of your true self to them while you're alive well you're in luck, because you have nothing but time :)
>>
>>33674115
Anon not to be blunt I'd rather die than show my true self around them, my father especially. I guess that's part of the dilemma? I don't feel safe doing so but I still feel obligated (mostly to my brother) to share a part of myself should something happen to me.
>>
>>33674143
Well I'm not sure if I can give you any more advice without you elaborating. What's your true self?
>>
>>33674145
I'm a closet tranny :|
>>
>>33674166
Also my dad hates trannies and he rants about them constantly so yeah lmao
>>
>>33674166
Well you're going to have to make a decision to troon out and force it into the open, or to not transition and live as a male. I'm not going to make that decision for you, but you can't really straddle the path for very long.
>>
>>33674177
I don't think I'll ever transition desu (and if I did he would never know, or I'll be too many miles away for him to retaliate) but whatever. I'm sorry if this is coming across as rude but I don't really like talking about this very much, if you have any tech tips related to the OP post tho it would be nice, but thanks for the advice regardless.

I would print them on CD ROMS and bury somewhere around the house and then leave a map to the drives on your body

fuck just saw that you will leave behind tranny pedo porn :( poor your family
>>
>>33674027
How about being memorable to them while you're alive?
>>
>>33674027
share it while you are here. probably your laptop will go in the trash or get sold if you die.
>>
>>33674027
write password on stickynote and put it on your keyboard. dont forget to delete all your embarrassing stuff
>>
>>33674027
Get/create a living will. There are free templates online. In the document put the password to the laptop on it and decide who should get your digital stuff and physical stuff. Or you could have no password on the machine but that's not a good idea. A living will is supposed to be updatable so you can do as you please when you please. Honestly, every living person should have one just in case.

Unfortunately, getting rid of all the stuff someone accumulates through life is a big burden on those who are left to receive and process the deceased person's things. We spend our whole life accumulating STUFF and in the end you can't take any of it with you but what is in your head/brain. So think about that when you have to buy things...Not picking on you or anything...just giving you a perspective to think about.

unfortunately this. We keep things meaningful to us, or perceived as valuable, useful, whatever, but to others it's just stuff they now have to deal with it. Most of the things we cherished will end up in a dumpster once we are gone.

drives don't last forever, and especially laptops that are a daily driver. Look into cloud backups or a home NAS for yourself, if not for any legacy. If you are still here in twenty years, you want your data to also be here too right?

Some cloud services like github offer legacy ownership transfers in the event of the account owner's death, but if your family is not technical that won't help much.

Although I've been in similar situations and had to make similar choices, everyone's situation is different and I won't pretend to know what you are going through. I hope you have trusted friends or family you can confide in though. It's a real struggle to work through those things alone.
