Up until the late 2000's it seemed like technology was just going to get better to make things work better, but despite the leaps and bounds in processing and storage and battery power since then all we have is bloat to drive advertising revenue. Everything is a service, everything requires you to use someone else's equipment somewhere else even if you're not aware of it, and the internet may have been the biggest loss since useful information is now buried beneath layers of SEO optimized garbage and "content" produced by someone letting an AI regurgitate the generic information that another AI already output. Everything requires an account, or even worse, SSO so that everything you do is tied together for more efficient data collection. Windows 11 does little more for the end user from a productive standpoint than even XP did, yet the system requirements are an order of magnitude higher because of all the backend shit running to feed information to Microsoft's cloud platform whether you want it to or not. And it's getting harder and harder to get around it and find ways to use computers or hell even appliances and cars without it needing to sign into something.
