I have my heart very set on one job but they're not doing interviews for another two months
Another one that would be good but I don't want it nearly as much. Applications open now.
Presumably if I were to get offered the second that would happen before I had an indication of whether I would get the first.

So I don't know what to do...
This is a very niche field. Both these companies are looking to hire at least two and almost all the candidates will be among my class, of whom only about 7 are actually looking for work (and I'm probably ranked 2nd in the class). So I've got a pretty good chance. But there could also be people from outside the course applying (there's one other place that runs the course and I don't know how many people they have or what they're like, or maybe someone who finished the course a year ago or more).

Anyway the point is I have a pretty good chance of getting either job but there are not guarantees. I don't know how stupid it would be to not apply for the second job in order to focus on the first. If I don't get that one then I may be stuck without a job in the field for half a year at least.

What should I do? I mean I know I should probably apply for the first one regardless and see what happens. Good practice if nothing else. But if they actually offer me the job I don't know what to say or do.

If the job you really wants interviews you and gives you an offer, take it and reneg on the other company if it's somewhere you're okay burning bridges with. Companies don't care about workers so you shouldn't care about them.

There is nothing wrong with applying for both. The problem arises if you're offered your second choice first. It is obviously immoral to take that job and then change your mind when the better offer comes along, but people do that sort of thing all the time. There is also a practical concern. Especially in a limited field, it's a remarkably small world, and the company you jerk around over a job offer now might be the one you want to work for later.

Sometimes honesty works. Apply for the second-choice job and, if you get the offer, you can tell them honestly that you're waiting to hear from Firstchoice Co

Yeah good points. Honesty may be best, if they offer me the job just say I want to take it but I'm holding out on another and see what happens. If they really like me they might be willing to wait though I doubt it. I don't like the idea of screwing people over although I don't think it's likely I'd work for them in the future. Reputation still matters, I suppose.
