if you like what cologne someone is wearing complement them and ask what it is, or perhaps take it a bit slower and visit a couple days in a row to work your way through the selection at a store, etc; the first step is finding _something_ you like so you can use that as a starting point, then you:
a: talk to someone at a store (think macys or such) and say you like x, get their opinion, and see how you like what they suggested
b: go look at fragrantica.com and try see what people (who are way to into this shit) thinks is similar and seek it out to see how you like it


the particular le male variant in picrel is the coconut smelling one, fuck that shit is terrible; the rest of le male are varying amounts of fucking wonderful though; I wear ultra male the most often

I also wear one of mercedes benz branded ones, it's super citrus-y

there's some off-brand thing I got for free when I got a le male bottle at an outlet store that specialized in perfume / cologne that reminds me of the super strong stuff that I smelled a lot when I was in europe that I also wear from time to time

note that counterfeiting is rampant and sticking to trusted sources is best

Just check out some "best compliment getter frags" on youtube and pick one in your price range. Order some samples, usually 1-3 dollars a piece and try them out at home, let it dry on your skin to know how it really smells on you.

I bought like 10 samples, narrowed them down from a site called Fragantica. Just looked up what I liked or at least the idea of liking, and from that I bought a couple bottles. Now have a small collection. Usually you do scents around seasons, but honestly you can get away with just one all-rounder if it's good.

Follow Gent Scents on youtube to get pointers about where to start. But ultimately you'll take that general guidance from that channel and test out what you like. Go to a slightly more upscale place than TJ Maxx, dress well, and you can get testers. Either way you need to test how they smell *on your skin*. It might smell good on a scent stick or paper, but it's different once it mixes with your body chemistry. Once you find one you like, buy it from TJ Maxx if they have it for cheaper or just use fragrancenet.com.

the pictured le male variant is le beau, the original le male is absolutely lovely and I wear it often

and yes, many are similar; they often do a run of something and discontinue it for a new slightly modified scent (I presume to have "something new" to drive sales)

Figure out what category of scent you like smelling like the most. For example, there's the fresh scent, aqua, woodsy, earthy, spicy, floral, citrus. I may be missing some categories but those are pretty common. From those categories, you can find subtle differences between brands and eventually find your favorite brand. If you like Aqua scents for example, most brands will have them in a blue bottle so you can try those first.

If you've ever smelled a scent on anyone else you've liked, try to think what category that would fall into. Or you can go to Ulta or Sephora where they have perfumes sitting on shelves you can spray and smell. Or the classic, go to a department store's perfume departnent and people will be more than happy to help you pick out a scent you like. You don't have to buy it from them, you can take the name and then go to TJ Maxx. Stores also sell "discovery packs" that will contain small samples of a bunch of scents.

It gets much less overwhelming once you know what category of scents you like the most.
