I'm starting a new job "hitting the ground running" Monday, medical coding. I self-studied and got the certification -one famous in the industry as the gold standard and considered extremely difficult to get- and passed a pre-hire assessment, but I'm still concerned about choking it now that money is on the line. This job is twice as much money as the position I've left, so i feel like that added pressure of this being effectively my "big break" could potentially trip me up. advice on getting over it? pic unrelated, the bright and comfy lunch room of the prior workplace.

What do you mean?

Take it slow. Nobody expects you to be super-efficient from the start, so take the time to double-check everything until you begin to feel more confident

Was it expensive/hard? What are the knowledge, skills and/or studies you need for "medical coding"? I know how to code on a junior level

I'd been making relatively shit money before now, and I feel like subconsciously the fact that I'm now making comfortable money make psyche me out. t poor paying jobs, if I sucked, I could go get another similarly poor paying job. If I tank THIS, I'll actually be pretty bummed out.

difficult, but I was already in the medical field so I had some basic knowledge of the terms I was expected to know. Expensive I'd say roughly $1000 in total, I self-studied everything with no classes so I just paid for books and a few guides and flash cards. I ended up passing the exam on the first attempt.

>What are the knowledge, skills and/or studies you need for "medical coding"?
It's matching diagnoses and procedures into alphanumeric codes for billing, it's less "computer coding" more translation, but you have to be very aware of the dozens of rules and guidelines.

tfw "learn to code" might be useful advice

you'll be fine anon, they know it's your first job in the field so they're willing to help you get started. You seem like a smart guy, just make sure to sleep properly, have a balanced diet and try to work out. This will all help to be clear-minded while at work. If you're struggling, don't pretend to have everything under control but ask questions instead. Wish I would take my own advice...

Hey anon, congrats on actively trying to make your life better. As others said, no one is expecting you to be super fast or know everything at the start, it's much more important that you don't make mistakes. If you find yourself asking someone something a second time, seem slightly abashed and write that shit down so you don't ask a third time. And if you do happen to make a mistake that you catch, simply own up to it, it's 10x worse if you let it slide and hope that no one notices.

What your colleagues and boss will want from you is someone who is affable and willing to learn and grow.

I can say they've been somewhat impressed by being self-taught and passing the exam on my own dime and my own time, and last week was a little bit of a "dry run" and the lady isntructing said me and the other woman I was with (apparently only the two of us were hired) caught onto everything much quicker than usual, which is encouraging.
