I have had a social anxiety caused by very unpleasant life circumstances and I want to get /fit/ but I'm not feeling too well getting in, even though I tried several times and tried to stick to it but failed. Should I ask a shrink to get me medicaiton? I was never diagnosed because my family is paranoid about psychiatry. I am 35. The problem is not even the anxiety itself but even if I don't feel fear, I will get snappy and cause trouble - I used to get into fights a lot as a kid. I am already taking nootropic \ anti-seizure medication - Levetiracetam + Dimethylethanolamine + Ginkgo biloba extract (anti-coagulant supplement).
>>33732750I think that they make special meds for anxiety that are different from depression meds. At any rate, check how whatever med interacts with your current medication, tell family that you are taking meds and when you start talking them so they can notice behavioral changes or other symptoms, and if a med doesn't work after 2 weeks tell your doctor and ask for a switch or a higher dose
>>33732912The doc prescribes benzos but those are good for panic attacks. I don't have those. I just have a general apathy that paralyzes me when I want to do something. I used to be more spontaneous about this when I'm drunk but I had to cut that too because my doctor told me to stop. SSRIs can be a good substitute. Anyway, I'll take that advice and I'll make sure to schedule a follow up beforehand.
no. I am 42, I have been on them since 15 and the only reason I take them now is because if I stop taking them, the side effects will be horrific. I really doubt that they have done anything positive for me or anyone else I personally know. so I would only go down that path if you have absolutely no option
>>33732750>Should I ask a shrink to get me medicaiton? No. Why does everyone want to take shortcuts these days, learn to be a fucking man and control yourself.
>>33734487I am in my 30s. I tried it and wasted so much productive time I could have used to get fit and start a family. As I was saying, life circumstances were not very conductive either. I had my uncles killed and my father emigrated. Then Inhad to emigrate myself after the secret service got me on a list. Then I spent a decade dealing with bureaucracy and had no money to get help or time to focus on myself. No man should go through this.
spend less time on the internet and that will have more of a positive effect than meds
>>33734487Brave new world.
I'm not a doctor, never taken meds that alter my mental state and i've only watched few vidoes on the topic from this guy https://www.youtube.com/@taperclinic/videos and I suggest you do the same, especially this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL755ZAXy9sBut the gist of it is that if you go to a doctor, you will spend like 15 min in his office and he will give you a prescription. But problem is 15 min every once in a while is not enough and once you get on these meds you will very likely be on them for life. Shit like this is not meant for everyone and it is more likely than not that you are just a normal guy who got trapped in a thought process that you are not in fact normal and now need to pop pills. These pills will not fix your life, they might feel like they do though.Have you been to therapist? yes? try again, find a new one or whatever and tell him that you have been thinking about SSRIs. You are 35 and now it's time to stop looking for easy solutions. Also take everything i just said with a grain of salt, after all we are all on /adv/ and everyone here is fucked in the head in some way
>>33732750Avoid drugs like plague, including psychiatric ones. If you need something, use it for max 2 months as a kick start for change, bupropion increases mood and motivation at the cost of anxiety. Most antidepressants make you foggy and crippled. Drugs are never good permanent solution. If you are having hard time coping, most likely it means you need to change your surroundings, and the fact that you haven't already means that you don't have the courage to do the right thing because it feels bad at first.
>>33735434I was gonna post this exact doc, he makes good videos on how disastrous psych meds are for people. I self medicated my social anxiety (yes I know, retarded) and the withdrawal from that from only 3 months of use was absolute hell on earth. I cannot imagine the journey people who've taken this meds for years must go through
>>33736147Self medicated with phenibut**10/10 drug if you do it once every ~10 days. Hell on earth for a full week if you take it for even 3 days in a row. Not worth it man.
>>33732750Taking anti-depressants will make you permanently depressed and mentally unstable.
>>33732750Psychiatrists are THE defacto experts at drug interactions and side effects management when and if you start on a new psych med. So, yes, I'd seek one out. You'll check in once a month until you fit the right dosages and get it all under control. Paxil can help you get your ass to the gym and get your goals done. Why are you on that specific anti-coagulant? Ginkgo has a lot of interactions and may actually interact with your seizure meds. Geesh, is that doctor prescribed?
>>33732750You can get propranolol if you issues with social anxiety are psychosomatic symptoms like blushing, shaking etc. If you can function in daily life then antidepressants might be more trouble than help. You could be one of those who just get benefits, but often they can create more issues than you originally had. And they can increate irritability, especially it activating ones like efexor, prozac and wellbutrin, or make you gain a lot of weight
