I’ve had huge friend circles and smaller one, and periods of absolute anonymity. It’s nice to have friends but if you tear back the façade, most people are taxing to deal with and many plot against each other, using you as the intermediary.

However, it can have its good sides. Like, I managed to fuck most of the viable women and sex pest the rest. And you can find work easier with a network.

However, the ultimate confidence you can develop is by making anyone your friend and creating a mutually beneficial relationship. Most people can be bought with food and drugs, and access to sexual opportunities (from other people).
