I just found out my employer is paying new hires $20 an hour starting out. I've been there for 5 years and I'm only making $17. Am I just cooked and should I just leave?
>>33778553Tell them to pay you $22 or you are leaving.
>>33778553Depends what kind of job and what the alternatives are. If you'll have trouble finding another job, then stay. If you think you can find better, then ask for $25 or you leave. It's not even a question of money at this point, but of scummy practices towards long time employees.
just look for a new job. don't ask for a raise or give ultimatums without having another job lined up first. i made that mistake once and was let go and then was unemployed for a while. never making that mistake again. if you're unhappy just find something else and leave, don't even consider staying.
>>33778587If I stay, I'm the lowest paid employee in the company. I don't get any guidance from my manager and everyone who was hired in with me has been promoted or moved into other departments.
>>33778704Start drinking at work or whatever other stupid shit you feel like doing. Earn your low status.

>>33778725Sperg harder tismbro you have nothing to lose.
>>33778732I already sperged out on Friday
>>33778553Sad truth of the modern era is that you don't get raises unless you are part of a strong union, and you don't get job security at all ever. Best thing you can do is try and job hop once every 2 years. Start up the resume machine and grind away at applications. If you can get a hold of a recruiter, use them to get yourself offers. If you really like your job, get and offer and make an ultimatum, but if they aren't giving you the pay of the newcomers, they aren't just going to start giving you raises. Also, $20 an hour is chump change, get a marketable skill. Traddies make $30 for entry level.
>>33778879I have to use a wheel chair to get around, there are no trades for someone like me.
>>33778886>I have to use a wheel chair to get around, there are no trades for someone like me.I wonder if a machine shop could work for you...running a CnC mill couldn't be impossible for someone with no legs....
>>33778553I'd say it depends on the size of the employer. If you work for a large business or corporation there is literally no way you will be able to get a raise because the pay rate is set by weird algorithms in HR nobody knows about or understands. Your only option is to simply walk out. If its a small business and they rely on you more, then leverage with your boss.
>>33778553Leave. I was at a hospital clerical job about a decade making $14, no yearly inflation bonuses (for reference I started in 2015 making $11 an hour, left in August at $14.50). They start fresh hires with no medical office experience at 16, Emergency Room at 17. When I got a medical coding certification, I talked to the HIM manager for a promotion. He offered one with zero pay increase.I genuinely couldn't believe it, but sure enough, there was no other option but to leave. For whatever reason, someone told these people that fresh hires deserve more than who they have at the moment, and negotiation doesn't seem to work. I actually really liked the place and likely would have accepted ANY pay bump, and they decided I wasn't worth one fucking penny more than I was already making... but a FRESH hire would be. Bail, OP.
>>33778553>Get an offer at another job. >Tell your manager you've been offered more money but you're willing to negotiate your salary here to stay on if he's interested >If you're valuable to the company, they'll give you the $20>If you're very valuable to the company, they'll offer you more >If you have no value to the company, they'll offer you no increase You then have two options, leave or stay. If you leave (even if there's no real salary increase in the new role, you've freed yourself of a workplace that doesn't pay you what you're worth). If you stay then you were always worth the low rate they're paying you and you proved it to them and yourself. Good luck anon.
