I'm 40. Been a NEET for pretty much all my adult life except. I only worked sporadically when i was 19 at a volunteer job at a thrift store that I was paid through a grant. So that means I dont have any real experience for a good chunk of years. Most of the reason I didnt work was because my housing was unstable because disability only gave me $535 for rent and $300 for food which was barely enough for a room in a rooming house. I often ran into sketchy people and I was kind of an autist so Id end being in a cycle of running to the youth shelter and other shelters and couch surfing throughout my 20s. I tried to find work around when I was 25 but I only managed to secure one interview at walmart and they didnt want to hire me because of the 5 year gap in my work experience(or lack thereof) I also didnt finish high school because I had a rough start when I was still in my dad's house, he stopped bringing in food and it forced me out which started the pattern of living in shit housing. Now i have stable housing because a program exists now that actually gives me enough for the basics. I have an apartment but Id like to work because being a NEET kind of sucks because I have nothing to do. The only jobs I'm qualified for doing by my lack of a high school diploma and low experience are menial minimum wage jobs and by the looks of it going in stores nowadays those tend to be taken my temporary foreign workers and international students which we've had a flood of in the past 10 years. (I'm in Canada)
>>33845679Yeah, there's not much you can do. Probably try doing small jobs under the table, as you will have no chance for an official minimum wage job. Companies get federal monetary incentives for hiring visible minorities, so you'll never get hired if you're caucasian unless you have a plug. Go pick fruits in BC, or try to get in those fast construction programs. But I think you'll stop getting benefits if you earn too much.
>>33845712The program manager here said that I can make $300 and then after that they'll start reducing the amount of grocery money I get and after a certain threshold Id have to contribute to rent depending on how much I make
>>33845724$300 extra, per month? Do you have the basic welfare plan or you're on the disability one?
>>33845679The same charity that supports you should have a find-you-a-job program
>>33845758It's not the basic welfare plan. The basic welfare system only gives you $535 for rent and $300 for food and thats about it. That's atleast how it was the last time i was on it in 2021. As for the program I'm in the rent they are willing to pay is based on the average rent in the city, so they're much more generous with the rent money, then I get $500 for groceries spread out over the month and they pay my phone and internet. They told me they dont usually pay for internet but felt it's something I rely on so they made an exception.
>>33845758Oh forgot to mention it's not a charity, it's a government funded program for mental health which they thought I was disabled enough to be on. I dont know if these programs existed before but I kind of wish something like this existed in my 20s. I know there are work programs for people with mental illness but so far the program coordinator seems too preoccupied with other stuff to talk to me and the staff are patronizing and treat me like I'm helpless(which he's concerned about but doesnt do much about)
