I cannot relax my muscles for the life of me. Especially my upper back and neck. My massage therapist is horrified every time. What can I use to fix this? I have tried weed and liquor but they both make it worse. Along with stretching of course which, despite doing every day for months, does not help.

So now I am here and I am desperate and will go to any length to get my hands on something that can help me feel normal

ideas:
mental and emotional causes
laying down or sleeping on the floor/hard surface
massaging it yourself
cold and hot water/saunas
lotion for sore muscles you can buy at the pharmacist
the tension can be due to tensions in other areas of the body

A hot hot bath

Mindset issue: overly defensive and apprehensive of threads. Becoming more "dgaf" helped me.

Are your muscles sore and tense all the time or are you getting cramps? Either way, it sounds more like you have some sort of nutritional deficiency. Before you do anything, try eating some multivitamins and specifically focus on getting a good dose of magnesium and potassium.
When I would go days without eating anything, my legs and feet would cramp up uncontrollably. I could only combat it with supplements when I couldn't eat food.

It could be that your nervous system is leaving you in a state of flight and fight all the time. I recommend you read these books. They talk about chronic pain but are related to tense muscles. They helped me relax my muscles by learning to calm my nervous system.

Mind Your Body - Nicole J. Sachs
Unlearn Your Pain - Howard Schubiner
Complete Self-Help for Your Nerves - Claire Weekes

Strength imbalances causing muscles to overexert as compensation. Try exercising.
Yeah it sounds counterintuitive but if everything logical failed try something different.

just a quick idea, is there a way that you have undiagnosed asthma or copd ? i do have these two and unless i dont use my meds, my muscles are always straining both in my back and neck until the point of pain.

I bought a pack of CBD jellies for my back and it made a huge difference. It was a pulled muscle so not totally the same thing, but I get tension headaches too and taking them for that worked.

Interesting story, anon. There is a type of therapist called "myofascial release" massage. Do some research locally, it's a subspecialty and really helpful. You work with the therapist, giving verbal feedback on pain, as they systematically go up and down a muscle with their thumbs, pressing hard, robbing the tissue of blood flow. When the pain starts, they move down to the next spot. At the point they have done that for the entire muscle, then and only then, can they stretch out the tendons and actually make a difference. You can't do this on your own to the neck and shoulders.

After you've done some work, check out upper cervical care UCC speciality of chiropractic to make sure your head is on straight, hah, for real.

Let me ask you, do you carry tension in your jaw? and TMJ joint? If so, maybe you would benefit from a SSRI, oddly enough. Paxil. Also see a dentist to make sure you don't have a reason for the tension, so just one tooth.

My doctors have given flexeril and baclofen over the years. They both work to give you a fully relaxed night, and you might get so floppy and relaxed, you can roll into a position to make some back pain the next day. Hah.

I also love bedtime teas for sleep as well as a hot shower to reset.

Got any tips on actually practicing that mentality.
