In some perspective, the most powerful people in the world are not in education, employment nor training. In some practical return to circumstance, the endpoint may not also be to work forever but reaching a level of mobility you could do without it.

For the in-between though, 'too late' as much as you believe it to be. There are people who start over in their 40's and 50's, entire fortunes lost and are gained in glimpses, and money is merely transfer from one place to another.

I escaped at 27, but the younger the better obviously. To me, 21 is insanely young. 25+ is when the anxiety starts

I was a neet at 21, depressed, college dropout, just sat at home browsing 4chan, watching anime, playing computer games, and looking at porn all day, hating my life.

I'm now 36 and a lawyer. So no it is absolutely not too late to escape.

It's not hard to get a job. You're just lazy.

You can "escape" any time by not being a lazy bum who won't apply himself to his university study.

I wasn't neet for more than 6 months or so. My therapist told me how important it was for my mental health that I get a job so my days would have structure, I'd get out of the house, and feel some satisfaction from being able to hold down a job and make money. It took me some time to get better mentally, and I was briefly on SSRIs which did help, though I quickly stopped taking them after a few months as soon as I was feeling better.

To make a very long story short, I went back to college, fell for the STEM meme, dropped out again humiliatingly, worked a number of jobs for several years, went to college #3 and got a humanities degree at 29 while working part time, worked a government job for a few years, then quit to go to law school.
