I'm an aspie, and live far away from my family. My mother misses me but doesn't tell me, she'll open up to my sister, who has informed me of this. I'm really bad about remembering to call my mom. I find it hard to chat, sometimes there's not much to talk about. What do people talk about when nothing happens in your day to day?
I want to try to be a better son. Its hard at times since I have a hard time understanding the need for idle chatting.

When I talk to family members, I don't really know what to talk about. I just visit them, just to be with them. Don't dwell on it; maybe your family needs a visit; they miss you.

This may sound forced or artificial, but it is perfectly normal - collect things to talk about.

I'm a more-or-less normal adult who phones my mother once a week. During the week I notice (and even jot down a list of) things she might like to hear about

I saw something really funny the other day....
My boss said something nice to me today....
I'm reading a new book that I'm enjoying....
You mentioned last week that [something happened] - how did that turn out?
Remember my friend Bill? I just heard that he ....
