Maybe see a Therapist or a Doctor or something. Suicidal Ideation is a bummer.

It's so far out of line from what he thought he was capable of that it causes him huge amounts of stress after the fact.

In your case, you probably never imagined you would ever do X, so when you almost did it, it was almost as if you were having an identity crisis.

I'm not exactly sure of how to solve your problem, but I think an important first step is taking time to really examine yourself and understand who you are.
