Given a certain set of environmental factors and influences, especially in early development, its pretty easy to predict how people are going to turn out. The idea that we're all these hyper independent beings who consciously choose our attachment styles and emotional regulation is false. Its a distressing thing to accept because it acknowledges that so much of the foundation of our personalities is out of our control. The long and the short of it is that the internet has massively increased the size of our world but also increased the amount of exposure to social influences, both negative and positive. The fear of being alone/unwanted/undesirable only seems to grow the larger our communities are. We could go into historicals but its primarily three things. a) the exponential rise in dysfunctional households where children aren't given the proper positive reinforcement, b) a society that, especially post WWII, puts a social premium on women being only as valuable as their youth and beauty, and c) an absolutely rabid male-driven demand for pornography.For the record, people have always been obsessed with belonging. The internet just hyper accelerates these innate drives and allows you a window into lives you wouldn't have seen otherwise.
