I wanna go on trips around my city but have had terrible experiences with nogs harassing me. I want to be able to defend myself but not actually kill anyone, so I don't have to worry about legal bullshit. It doesn't have to be a gun but anything better than pepper spray or a pocket knife that I can carry around in LA.

Don't be that guy.Here is some "not legal" advice. The one crime that you can be in the act of commuting that doesn't remove your right to self defense is being unlawfully armed. That is to say you may not be allowed to have a gun but the law for you using it are the same as if you were allowed. So if you are in danger and shoot some one you won't lose self defense.
