I booked IELTS academic this friday. It's in less than two weeks.I'm 23, no uni, no employment history, I bought condoms online three and a half years ago, never used them and don't even know where they are now.I took this expensive exam before almost 2 years ago and even though I feel like I should have done better, because deep inside down I believe that I'm super competent in everything, I got band 7 overall, and the speaking part was a disaster, I scored 6.5.I didn't prepare for the exam in any way last time, only the day before I hurriedly watched the filmed speaking tests of various scores on Youtube.I made the thread wanting to get advice on how to crush this test, because otherwise, I feel like it's just completely over for me, so yeah I provided unrelated "weird" things about myself, buf it's so that I would paint the picture of the state of my mind. It's an extremely expensive test and I have no good reason to take it and in the speaking part you're supposed to have a conversation about yourself with the examiner. Problem is that my self-confidence is non-existent and I feel super inadequate at this stage of my life. I feel like my best bet is to practise performing believable lies about myself, because even if I don't stammer like last time and display the needed fluency, my score would suffer because there's just been nothing going in my life the past 5 years or more. How do I do that? Lying casually avout trivial things is easy even to toddlers, but the speaking test isn't that, I feel like on average one couldn't appear plausible if made to lie.
You don’t have to lie in the IELTS speaking test. The examiner doesn’t care about your life story, only how well you speak. You could have no job or degree and still score high if you sound clear, fluent, and confident. They never fact check anything you say.If you feel like you have nothing going on, just talk about it in a calm and thoughtful way. Say things like, “I’ve been focusing on improving my English and figuring out my next steps,” or “I’ve had some quiet years that helped me think about what I want to do next.” That kind of answer sounds real and gives you space to show vocabulary and structure.Trying to invent a fake life will make you hesitate or trip up. It’s much better to practice explaining your real situation naturally. Record yourself answering random questions every day and work on keeping your sentences flowing. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s sounding comfortable and easy to understand. You can get a solid band score without pretending to be someone else if you focus on talking smoothly and showing range in your words.
