I'm diagnosed with ADHD and planning to go back to college next year after a 5 year hiatus. I really don't want to go back to my meds but I'm also getting really worried I'm going to mess this up again. You guys were helpful when I was getting off the adderall months ago so I was wondering if you have advice for specifically studying with adhd and if it's even realistic that someone like me could succeed. I'm quitting my job for this so it's a risk
>>33952752>ou guys were helpful when I was getting off the adderall months agoYou got off prescription meds without consulting your doctor?Holy fuck you're retarded, you really drank the "meds bad" schizo koolaid huh?
>>33952773ya i feel better now too. my doctor knows
>>33952777You're a moron
>>33952791why doe. /adv/ didn't tell me to quit if that's what you're thinking. I was asking about dealing with withdrawal
Leaving your job to study, knowing that you have a learning disability... risky if you ask me.I also got adhd and dropped out and then tried to go back to school. In my experience the only way I was able to handle college was by focusing solely on what classes I WANTED to focus on. I only signed up for like 1 class a semester and literally didn't give a shit if I passed or not in order to take the pressure off. Only then was I able to actually enjoy the material and study, and that's when hyperfocusing finally showed itself to be useful. I skipped the gen Ed's and anything that was not strictly my interests because I knew I would fail them already, as I had done before already.Ive still have had stable work the whole time I did this though, so I had a safety net in case things fell through.Im not really sure what advice to give you. Please make sure you have the ability to keep yourself fed and keep a roof over your head though. Those are necessary to being able to do what you want.
>>33952752Do it do it do it you cannot fail possibly sign up for 21 credit units per semester your adhd will definitely be nicer to you *this* time and won't fuck you over
>>339527931. Why did you get off your meds if you're going back to school? If anything, adhd meds are necessary for your condition which IS a learning disability 2. While adhds meds do make you feel zombie like in regular life, you can't afford to risk failing because some redpill dipshit told you all meds are bad3. ADHD meds are only bad when you don't have a task or specific things to focus on, and considering you'll be in school, that's perfectly fine4. ADHD is so closely linked with autism/generalized anxiety disorder/depression, I can't help but feel you made this choice to quit based on someone persuading you while in a bad state of mind All in all you're very stupid

This is good I could probably take it slow and work a job along with it. I just can't work this specific job I have with school it just takes too much time.>Please make sure you have the ability to keep yourself fed and keep a roof over your head though.I don't think it could get bad enough that I'm homeless it'll just be a lot of time and money wasted>>33952808So true>>33952833Maybe. I still have a stash of meds and I could probably get my doctor to give me more if I'm desperate. I just really really don't want to take it again. I stopped because of anxiety mostly
>>33952752Always had Adhd, didn't know till recently. Used to be an honours student but have not been in school for 7 years before this. Just finished a 3 month course for my apprenticeship and by the end of it I was back in the study groove.Music with no lyrics, I personally like jazzA dedicated study space, isolated from the rest of the house in a QUIET LOCATION NOISE CANCELING HEADPHONESPhone in another room, or at least waaay out of sight Give yourself an HOUR MAX at home before getting back into studyingObjective based studying, loose form reading is fucking horrible with adhd but having a goal related to subject matter or a practice test is awesome. Finally, caffine can be a huge help but being able to have SOME medication helps a lot, ESPECIALLY on bad days. I personally take 36mg methylphenidate XR on bad days and just crush a few redbulls on good ones.
>>33952980All great stuff anon I'll use some of these later. Also glad you're successful despite the adhd it gives me some hope too>I personally take 36mg methylphenidate XR on bad days and just crush a few redbulls on good ones. When I used to take adderall I felt completely useless on off-days so idk how well i can handle this alternating
>>33952752i would not quit your job for this - im fellow unmedicated ADHDer , your job is doing more than you think for you with that degree of stability and keeping you (probably) on your feet. You CAN succeed , I literally was forced to drop out the first time around and I am getting 80s now and that's still with pretty mid habits , if I was actually efficient - I could prolly hit 90s like anyone else , but it didn't happen overnight. You build those habits before so it doesn't get you when you have money down. Your current plan carries such unnecessary risk and what are you even hoping to take in university ? What is so enticing or good that you feel you have to take the risk? Be honest.
>>33952980>>A dedicated study space, isolated from the rest of the house in a QUIET LOCATIONThat reminds me, I had some of my best adhd study sessions in the library with other adhd'ers. Knowing that everyone was there with the intention of studying created enough social pressure to keep everyone in check. If you can find a group to study with, I have spent hours studying with this method and then we all got ice cream afterwards :)
>some amount of adhd, i have no clue what severity as I have no frame of reference but my own and i refuse to entertain redditor anecdotes>phone rapes me thoughever>want to put it in a different room during study time but 15 years of cunt mom conditioning makes me panic at the thought of missing a call, which impedes my focus on its own
>>33953073>A dedicated study space, isolated from the rest of the house in a QUIET LOCATIONOnly to be distracted by your own thoughts and likely maladaptive day dreaming
>>33952980These just seem like ordinary tasks of cognitive hygiene that anyone would commit to, ADHD or not.
>>33953063I take it VERY sparingly, and typically on fridays so I have the weekend to "bounce back". I fill acknowledge that this might not be the move for everyone, products like caffeinated tea or even soda might be a better fit for you.>>33953073>If you can find a group to study with, I have spent hours studying with this method and then we all got ice cream afterwards :)I wish I could pull this off but I get way too sidetracked with external stimuli :,)>>33954604They're good tips in general but are particularly helpful with ADHD, most people can function without them, I find I can't but when I am in that space, mindset and really lock in I study incredibly efficiently.>>33953093>Only to be distracted by your own thoughts and likely maladaptive day dreamingThat's why I use music with no lyrics, it gets me in the mindset to study. I definitely spend a lot of time sitting there trying to work unable to, but it beats the hell out of not using those strats at all.
>>33952773ADHD meds were horrible for me.>>33952752ADHD meds are absolutely not meant to be taken everyday just because the world schedules itself in the way it does. If you DO use drugs again, I would highly suggest to use them every other day and not every day. That being said, meditation and deep diaphragmatic breathing for even 20 minutes a day, as well as exercise helps me a lot
I somewhat recently got my adhd diagnosis but to get meds it's a living hell expecially since it all hinges on wether or not my retarded general doctor will even accept a non national healthcare diagnosis. That's not even tapping the issue that I'm doing this without consent (I am an adult, but I have rather helicopter parents)
>>33953093>Only to be distracted by your own thoughts and likely maladaptive day dreamingThis is a personal assault
>>33952980I take 200mg tablets of caffeine and I don't feel anything
Get adhd accommodations by talking to the college. You can get extra time on tests, distraction reduced environments, and even get on lists for jobs that have a retard quota to meet. Thats how I graduated and got my 3 figure govt job.
>>33959011Six figure lmao. As I said, retard quota.
Question for everyone else with adhd here, do you guys have trouble remembering /retaining stuff? After we complete a lesson and do the homework, I can never remember 90% of what I learned even a few days later. I need to do thing over and over to retain it for only a little bit. Is it just me or is this something you guys deal with too? if so what do you do to help?
