This probably belongs on a doctors' subreddit, but they tend to be exclusive about what you post, so maybe you guys could give me an outside perspective? You tend to be more honest/harsh, which I need, so here I am.

I'm a nineteen year old girl. I didn't graduate my senior year (skipping + health problems) and am now on the path to earn my diploma by January. I've had an interest in medicine and the human body since I was a little kid. I sort of have a knack for it? It might just because it interests me, but I memorize medical things super easily. Not saying that I'm a medical prodigy or anything, just that I have an inclination for it. Towards it?

I'm not desensitized to gore, but blood doesn't freak me out. What I am freaked out by are things like rashes and parasites. I also have had lifelong myoclonus and mild coordination issues, and I don't think anyone wants a twitchy, uncoordinated doctor working on them. I understand that I can end up in a specialty that isn't super hands on, where I'm less likely to encounter the things I'm scared of, but I'll still have to do rounds in the ER in med school, so who knows what I'll have to deal with?

I've been considering going into psychology instead because of those reasons. It does interest me, I like helping people, and I've had experience with mental illness of my own. I'd like to be a psychiatrist. But at the same time, I'd love to work in physical medicine and specialize in neurology or genetic disorders. Still, I'm not sure I can make it through med school. I'm sensitive. I'm good in emergencies and can stay calm, but long term? I'm a huge pussy. I don't want to go into debt just to buckle under the pressure. Or become an inadequate doctor.

I know I have years to figure this out, but I like to plan. How would you feel if you had a doctor that was twitching and struggling while she worked with you? Is being sensitive enough reason to avoid medical school altogether? Should I pursue psychology instead?

anon, much of this site is controlled opposition and intentional bad advice...
it can be better than reddit for some things, but be careful
>>

i think you should pursue it if it's what you want, anon
but the debt, particularly for med school, would freak me out too
and i've heard it's kind of a nightmare to try and actually be a competent doctor & help patients, for various reasons

yeah I get that. Sometimes when people are over-the-top mean or malicious, it kinda serves to voice my negative thoughts and kind of embellish just how stupid and irrational those thoughts can be.

especially with all the insurance bullshit? I think I'd lose my mind. But I love helping people. I love medicine.

First year resident here.
>but I'll still have to do rounds in the ER in med school, so who knows what I'll have to deal with?
Entirely dependent on where you're at and what specialty you're gunning for. You often won't be the only medical student/intern on the service, so you can usually hand off procedures to someone else who would be more interested in them. If you make it known that you're interested in a non-procedural specialty, it'll be rare that you get asked to do anything crazy.
>I'd like to be a psychiatrist
Psych is very hot right now. Pathology and radiology are also fantastic specialties.
>I'd love to work in physical medicine and specialize in neurology or genetic disorders
Look into PM&R. Lots of physical rehab, neuro/stroke recovery kind of stuff. Genetic counseling is also a neat career path aside from medicine.
>Still, I'm not sure I can make it through med school.
Med school is a test of how much bullshit you're willing to endure, not how intelligent you are. Most of your "book" learning in medical school will be self-taught using standardized board prep resources. It's a solved problem with a clear roadmap (UFAPS), you just gotta grind through it.

Best thing to do at your stage is get into a big state university with plenty of research opportunities, get as many scholarships as possible cause debt fucking sucks. Keep your GPA up to keep the doors open, but you can major in whatever as long as you get the prereqs for med school done (ochem, biochem, stats etc).

Thank you so, so, so, so much. This seriously gives me so much hope and makes it all seem a lot more achievable. PM&R sounds like a fantastic field to look into. I've always loved medicine, but I've been letting doubts get to me. This really helps motivate me. I'm gonna do some more research. Thank you :)))

i dropped out of highschool
sometimes i wonder what it would be like to be a psychiatrist, though
>>
>>33956898
I was the only one out of my friends not to graduate. Dropping out wasn't an option so I just skipped. Now I'm at an alternative school and due to graduate soon. Not too sure when you were in high school, and I know there are a lot more options available to me now than in the past. But I just keep moving.

Psychiatry is cool. I hope you're happy where you're at, and if you're not, that you just keep moving too. Even if it sucks major ass balls.

The actual issue is that on Reddit you’d just get replied to by bots

PM&Rfag here
>I understand that I can end up in a specialty that isn't super hands on
Sounds like PM&R is not for you - the physical exam is essential to the specialty.
>I also have had lifelong myoclonus and mild coordination issues, and I don't think anyone wants a twitchy, uncoordinated doctor working on them.
You might be able to make a career as a physiatrist if you stick to inpatient only and don't do procedures. I have a colleague who has cerebral palsy and makes it work, but obviously they have barriers to having a clinic with lots of procedures. I certainly wouldn't want a doctor with myoclonus putting a needle anywhere near me. I otherwise agree with residentanon that psych/path/rads could be a good fit and to go to a state school to minimize debt.

1. Medicine is more cruel to women but seems bearable, also it's annoying trying to fit together family life (being pregnant and raising children) and clinical med life. If you are planning to have children, you won't be able to work for some years - meaning you will suddenly stop your clinical work progression, sometimes it might be hard to get back into it later.
2. Human body is amazing, but is a lot of shit to learn, it's easy to burn out.
3. You will get used to gore easily
4. Yes being twitchy doctor is bad, but as you said, just pick a specialty where hands are secondary/terciary
5. Do not be psychiatrist, you will deal with retards. And cunts who are there just to get the good meds. Also liers, liers and more liners, aggressive cunts, alcoholic cunts, dumb whores who are there for SSRIs that makes them fat and lowers their libido to negative values.
6. Neuro is cool but also dumb - you will encounter lots of people with harsh diagnosis and you will not help them too much (old saying: neuro knows everything cunt cure anything). Genetics are cool.
6. Psychology is cringe at best.
7. I would recommend dentistry but with shaky hands probably not.

If I were to chose again I wouldn't go into medicine. But now that it's over it's overall beneficial to be a doc.

You should not go to medical school, you should marry me and work at my clinic as a psychologist.
>>
>>33956607
You have to be of an unusual intensity, not merely have a vague inclination towards medicine in order to get in and succeed in medical school. If you want to leave a contact I can talk more to you about it.

I have a pretty intense interest in it. Not sure if it's a passion, but I do have a passion for helping people.
