I know this was super stupid and low tier and low impulse control but my company has a huge drinking culture and it’s expected you drink a lot at the holiday party or you get made fun of. It’s a small fintech with a one-person HR so it’s less lax but I still went too far.At 2:00am in the morning I spoke with the new guy, he’s an Irishmen from Ireland and we were talking Irish politics, I asked him about McGregor and the occupation of Ireland. At one point I said “it’s crazy how 40 years ago, an Irish nationalist and English nationalist would hate each other but now they’d both see each other as allies against foreign immigration. An Irishmen who doesn’t want his nation to be overrun would probably be good friends with an Englishmen of the same mindset, whereas 40 years ago an English and Irish nationalist would have been two enemies”He seemed taken aback by that comment like I was a racist, and I’m worried I’ll get reported to HR Monday, so I have my excuses ready>nobody overheard our convo, it was just us two, so I could just deny everything>I could phrase it as me asking him about McGregors ideology, I could say “oh I heard McGregor say this… I know it’s racist but I was asking him if that’s a big issue in Ireland”>Accuse him of being the racist one, and mention that I’m Jewish (which I am) and claim that he was being antisemtic by claiming the occupation of Ireland is like the occupation of Gaza and therefore I was just pushing back on thatObviously I hope none of this comes up but I’m worried that the Irishman already reported me and now I’m going to be in trouble.
