I drink too much and need to quit. But I'm finding it quite difficult. Do you have any tips on how you managed it? And once you've quit, how do you stay off it?
no one can make you quit. you have to want to quit more than you want to do anything else
>>34010645I want to. I hate it when my hands shake in the morning. I just want to know how to get through the first days. And then, find something else.
>>34010663go away somewhere where you have no access to it
>>34010670Yeah that might be a good idea. I need to get out of the city anyway
If you drink really heavily, talk to your doctor first. Quitting cold turkey might kill you. As for the challenge itself, go to an AA meeting, use a fake name if you want, and ask for help. There's no shame in it.
>>34010764>Quitting cold turkey might kill youI'm a bit worried about this. I tried to cut down, but that always resulted in 'fuck it, I want another one'Cold turkey would be less of a hassle. A few days of torture and then I would be done with it

>>34010820I know it's anecdotal, but I did cold turkey and ate shit for a few days; couldn't even write my name or hold a glass of water, violent shivering, dry heaving vomiting, could only manage a small bite of oatmeal every few 20 minutes. Recovered in a week. Like previous anon said, you have to want it more than anything else. Give up one thing for a hundred others. Trust me, please; alcohol WILL find a way to ruin you. It's always doing push-ups in the parking lot waiting for you to make a mistake, and you will.Think of it this way; provided you had a 'normal' childhood, you had fun with friends, laughed perfectly, felt sensations, pondered deeply... all of the things alcohol promises; but you had all that before booze. You lived it then, and you CAN live it now. Don't let the weight of the world trap you inside a bottle. Don't be a lion being led to a cage.
>>34011739Good post, thanks :)
>>34010635The problem is, you're not actually taking this seriously. Start by taking every single drop of alcohol in the house and pouring it down the sink. Then make a list of every single place you ever go, or go past, that sells alcohol, and don't go near any of them for the next three months. Anywhere you need to go, figure out a way to get there that doesn't take you past anywhere that sells booze. Any time you're invited to anywhere where alcohol is being served, say no. Don't watch any TV with alcohol adverts or with even people drinking. Don't take any medicines that contain alcohol; don't eat liqueur chocolates; throw away fruit juice before it starts to ferment! Then, KEEP YOURSELF BUSY. The worst possible thing you can do is let yourself get bored, or let yourself get lonely! Give yourself things to think about. Surround yourself with people: talk to them; listen; interact. Take trips to places you've always wanted to go to but never had the time. Watch movies you've been meaning to watch. Eat well, exercise like crazy. Keep yourself occupied. If the physical withdrawal symptoms are bad, talk to your doctor and ask them to prescribe something that will help you get past that; diazepam is a possibility. And once you're clean, consider asking your doctor for Disulfiram or something similar: this is a drug which will make you violently sick and ill if you drink even ac tiny amount of alcohol while you're taking it. That may help keep you straight for a while. (But obviously you have to be willing to take the Disulfiram).
>>34010820cold turkey can literally kill you, this isn't an exaggeration. alcohol dependence is severe.
>>34010635Depends how bad it isAntabuse worked for me but it doesn't actually make it easier so you have to be mentally prepared. I don't think I was physiologically dependent at all but the first two weeks fucking sucked. It got heaps easier after that. First time I stopped taking it after a month and relapsed shortly after but not as bad. Then a few months later took it for two months. After that still got drunk every so often but far less to the point it's barely an issue and managed to get my life back in track but that was a long process and still sometimes think I just need to go on Antabuse indefinitely so I never get plastered again
>>34010635Quit being a fag and you won’t need to worry about it. Don’t drink all the time. Only when you want to. Don’t drink too much. If you want to stop, just drink something else.
