If the mattress is too soft you'll sink all the way into it with your spine not supported in the middle; if it's too firm your spine will also be unsupported in the middle because you'll be perched up on your shoulder and hip with nothing under your waist. So, how firm you need depends on how heavy you are. Heavier people need a firmer mattress.

Mattresses made in the current year only last 5 years before becoming saggy. That's what happened with my medium mattress that was feeling slightly too firm when I got it in 2020, and now is so mushy I have to put a latex topper on to get more buoyancy until I can buy a new mattress.
