So I guess I'm just fucked. I really want to be a nurse after having been a programmer for 6 years, but with my GPA (in the USA it would be the equivalent to a 3.3, I graduated with a bachelor's in compsci) my chances for admittance are slim. Anyone have any advice on what to do to boost my chances? Other pathways I could explore? If it helps at all I'm based in Ontario, Canada.
>>34060589Yeah you're basically fucked. Might as well just quit now.
>>34060589Apply. Nurses are in short supply. They can't be picky. Don't admit defeat before you even tried. As the great one said : You miss all the shots you don't take. Worse case is you are refused. In which case you shrug and move on.
>>34060589Doesn't being a male nurse suck? I heard they make the male nurses do the worst work, e.g. dealing with fattest and most violent patients.
>>34060589They're in such shortage that they ship over under qualified 3rd worlder nurses, go for it.
>>34061332>violent patientsOP wants to be a nurse, not a psych ward attendant
>>34061332these women cant take any pressure at all when shit starts to escalate>>34061371tfw the angry ass 190 cm demented grandpa thinks that you're a burglar when you enter his room again
You could get your CNA.
>>34061453I'd be crippled in terms of job opportunity, and bridging programs are stupidly competitive.
I'm a physician and most male nurses are pretty chill. You would probably do better being an iv therapist though. Good pay and you don't have to clean up shit and console insane aggressive families. And you get to do procedures all day
>>34062210I hadn't considered that. I'll look into it, but just the same I really want to be a nurse. I'm good at being in the thick of stressful environments.
>>34061371Even then, I'm always down to scrap :^)
>>34062499Unironically come to the US and work here, many programs will fast track you if you already have a degree. Many nursing schools either have very close relations with local hospitals, if they aren't run BY the hospitals to begin with. Better yet, a lot of them will pay your schooling if you offer to work for that hospital for x amount of years.I don't know why people are saying "you're fucked", it's never been more the opposite. Healthcare is going to be hot for the next 25-30 years easy, and even when it cools off it will always be a relevant field to work in. Male nurses especially, clinical settings are practically on their hands and knees to get guys in scrubs to work for them. Neonatal, telemetry, geriatric, ICU, ED, every place is in high demand for them. >t. myself + entire family in the medical field.
>>34063090>Male nurses especially, clinical settings are practically on their hands and knees to get guys in scrubs to work for them.ya because it means women don't have to lift superfats into bed, physically restrain the mentally ill, or carry heavy things across the hospitalmale nurse is all the body wear and tear of a tradie without ever hitting six figures
>>34063118>ya because it means women don't have to lift superfats into bedLifting procedures are always done in a very methodical procedure with multiple nurses doing them, people who don't follow them get disciplined for doing so.>physically restrain the mentally illHospitals have "teams" from all departments (including security, custodial, chaplain, etc) that show up to deescalate people who are acting up at the hospital. Most of the time, just the sheer numbers of showing up at a site are enough to calm people down. Patients being physically combative to staff is an extremely rare occurrence.>or carry heavy things across the hospitalWhat are you on about exactly? There are departments that move furniture around, if that's what you mean. I don't even understand what you are trying to say here.>male nurse is all the body wear and tear of a tradie without ever hitting six figuresYou won't be getting as much as some of the top tradies, sure, but it's certainly less wear and tear on your body.
>>34060589Move to USA and be a nurse. They’re literally everywhere here. Every bimbo I know wants to be one
>>34060589if i got into medical school with a 3.2 gpa you can figure out how to be a nurse with a 3.3 gpa.USA btw
>>34063090Interesting. I'd like to do that, but I have a heart condition and insurance over there would fuck me.
>>34064662oh you're defective. just die then.
>>34060589>in the USA it would be the equivalent to a 3.3,They don't background immigrants when they apply for doctors licenses, you can't seriously claim they're going to do some deep background check on a college application where you "forget" to include your BSCS?Just tell them you worked at Amazon in the warehouse or delivering packages or something as long at the tuition bill gets paid they DGAF around here.
>>34067201Here in Canada (or at least Ontario) there's a centralized system where they can see all that shit.
>>34067550sounds fucking stupid
Nurses aren't doctors, the process is not that selective so stop worrying about nothing
