Is medical billing and coding a good paying job? I earn decently right now but it's hard labor and I really just want to make a fucking shitload of money so I can retire early

society is set up rn such that anyone without the immediate opportunity to get wealthy without thinking much about it will never get wealthy. it's a completely rigged system where wealth self-selects itself and everything else, all the billions of people struggling to get ahead, are just the new serfs. there will never be breathing room for the proletariat that's the whole point. if the capitalist didn't exploit the worker, if he compensated the workers for 100% of the value which he extracts from them, he wouldn't make any money. the whole economic structure is based on slavery and yet it congratulates itself on the fact that the new slaves are better off than the old slaves, a meaningless distinction grounded in fantasy and anachronism, when the meaningful distinction has to relate to current standards not past ones... a serf with an iphone and a studio flat is still a serf, the overarching structure of exploitation remains exactly the same even if the quality and quantity of the materials involved in it has increased. i would drop this puerile search for wealth and reward if i were you.

Yes it pays extremely well if you can get your foot into the door, but be prepared to deal with bitchy office politics as ALL of your coworkers will embody the spirit of spinster cat-women, regardless of their actual gender or marital status. Expect to job hunt a few times, starting at venture cap med offices and hopefully landing at a top private practice eventually. >Unironically make friends with doctors at your gym / golf / tennis and ask for recommendations or ins

I started a coding job in September at $30 an hour, which is on the higher end of entry level pay. It goes up from there and a good Inpatient gig can get you $50 and up if you're good. Get AHIMA's CCS, it's the "gold standard" and pretty much the one cert that gets you anywhere. AAPC's CPC is the second best and easier to get, but doesn't get you into inpatient hospitals where the big money is. I self-studied for a year and got certified so it's doable without the thousands of dollars for classes. Keep in mind you're going to be studying your ass off for it.

All that said be aware "coding" and "billing" are actually two entirely different jobs, and billing doesn't pay anywhere near as much as coding because it can be done without any certification.

contrary to popular belief the field is almost entirely WFH now. There's a misconception that remote work is only for established workers as a perk for being in the field for a while, but post-pandemic pretty much 90% of all new jobs posted are WFH. You will rarely if ever have to deal with "office politics" in a coding job.

isn't this gonna get automated away when Epic gets around integrating some GPT?

I have a pretty good memory thanks to 'tism and no wife or kids so pretty much unlimited free time outside of work so that's why I think I would excel at this job. Thanks for the /adv/

This book helps a LOT (there should be an updated version, but if not the guidelines haven't really changed so you should be fine just getting this one). Breaks down everything nice and easy. You will need to buy current year ICD-10, ICD-PCS, and CPT books even just to study and prepare for the exam, so there is an initial investment. The payoff is well worth it though.

>Is medical billing and coding a good paying job?
As >>34065767 said, coding and billing are two different things. I worked in billing as a business office manager for my first gig, stepped down from that and just do basic front office desk work for $21 an hour. Billing will pay you less, BUT it can help you get further careers in Accounts Receivable/Revenue Cycle with enough experience, and usually a degree.

I'm currently trying to figure out what to do in healthcare at this point in time. Something like an EMR analyst.

I'm actually wrong about CPC not getting you inpatient; after asking around hospitals CAN choose to transition you from something like Emergency Department (considered an Outpatient position) to Inpatient without a CCS. I highly recommend buckling down and going straight for the CCS, though. It's what I did and it's very doable with just self-study and, again, worth it in the long-term.

It is now. AI may change that.

Agreed and to that point, if you don't already have a foot in the door in terms of networking and connections in place and OP is of adult age it's already too late. Any of these smaller industries, you either need to be absolutely exceptional or a friend/family hire. There's just not enough positions, and especially something higher stakes, people wont take a shot on you knowing your career path.

I know in my career, even taking on students to supervise, I see people in their late 20s early 30s who have on their resume that they are in school doing a midlife career change and I immediately bin it. I can't be bothered because it tells me they almost certainly are here for the money but wont have the intangibles in place from being immersed in the industry vs the person who at least has some kind of volunteer or work experience in (your case) medical stuff

wrong
>Any of these smaller industries, you either need to be absolutely exceptional or a friend/family hire
Also wrong. Contrary to AI anon, this shit isn't going to be automated for years, maybe decades (too many laws and loopholes to trust to a computer) and outlook is grim for having enough coders. There's an initial struggle getting hired just because few places WANT freshly certified coders, but the situation is so grim atm a lot of places have little choice. You're just assuming all "white collar office work" is the same and applying the same clichés to any desk job.

At least you have a name so I can filter your stupidity. I said nothing about AI so I don't know what you're stupid rant is ever addressing. You also don't know what the fuck OP is even talking about becuase that job isn't "coding". Reading comprehension.

I am a regulated professional in a role that works with people doing the career OP is talking about. You're completely wrong. Big city no chance, rural area they groom relatives into these roles while they're young

>>34070619
>I said nothing about AI
I explicitly called them "AI anon" and you can scroll up (ONE post above you) to see... another anon talking about AI
>HOW DARE YOU TALK TO ME LIKE THAT I'M A PROFESSIONAL
Hey faggot, what "professional" role are you in here? Tell me in detail, because I think you likely would have just named it to begin with and not just vaguely insinuating what it is.
