I want to quit my social media addiction for good. I spend most of my free time browsing websites like 4chan and Twitter (though I've tried cutting down on the latter), and occasionally watching things on Youtube. 99% of the time it makes me feel completely miserable and it's almost never something I actually want to be engaging in, but I do it because it feels more comfortable than engaging in my other hobbies. Doing the things I actually want to do, even things as simple as watching anime or playing vidya, causes me to feel anxious and exhausted, and I'm always feeling a gnawing inclination to go back to scrolling through social media feeds that never goes away. It's made me substantially more miserable and less productive and I want to cut it out of my life as much as possible. I've tried going cold turkey in the past and it hasn't worked in the long run, and even when I try to limit the amount of time I spend on these websites I gradually slip back to my old habits and end up wasting the majority of my day on them. Please help.

It's cuz FOMO OCD. You need to cure it by actually learning/getting in on whatever it is you're missing out on. Like you're probably evading avoiding some social thing cuz ur scared shitless and scroll info to cope and try to substitute the thing for an inferior thing. But unfortunately that just produces endless scroll type scenario cuz you can never actually quell the thing you miss out on, you just have to actually do the thing and get over the hump, no amount of scrolling will make you adequately prepared

I'm 38 and remember the time before smart phones and screens. You're right that spending days scrolling is a terrible way to live.

How to break of it?

-get rid of your smart phone for a while, use a flip phone. You can still spend too much time on your laptop but it won't always be with you and you'll get used to interacting with the physical world.

Smart phone is required for some things like Microsoft authenticator so you may need to log into that from someone you live with who has the app. That's about the only time I really can't do without a smart phone, no other way.

-Go to thrift stores and pick out some books. When you don't know what to do with yourself and you're bored, read a book to keep your mind busy.

Read "the shallows" by Nicolas carr. Also "digital minimalism" for motivation.

Most cities have a large collection of books that you are free to take home for a few weeks, for free or for a small fee. Just google "library in my city" but change "city" to the name of your city.
