My boss pulled me aside and told me that I have until May to get a nicer car, less than 10 years old because my rusty truck is an eyesore and makes the company look bad. If I don't, I'll be fired.

I only make $17 an hour, with my expenses, I only have $100 at the end of the month. I can't afford a car payment+insurance. I got the "your co workers can do it, so can you" speech.

I asked if I made it look better and they said that would not be acceptable.

The truck hasn't been unreliable. They are treating it like a dress code thing and a rusty truck doesn't look professional.

I'm putting in applications but this can't be legal, can it? I said I would when I can afford it, and expressed interest multiple times to learn new things to earn raises.

I've worked in the trades and as a Independent contractor for over 25 years.
I've never heard of such an assholish move.

I know just how sociopathic some of these fuckers are, once as a subcontractor, The lead of the core crew of a HUGE remodel, who was a biker club fag too, didn't like me AT ALL for showing him and his crew up in quality of work. So he sent his fucking toadies out to sabotage me at every opportunity, even to the point of fucking with my truck's brake lines. Once by taking a 5 pound engineers hammer to my brake calipers,(some trucks have ceramic caliper cups on them, like mine,) and once by smearing a dab of plumbers flux on the brake line between my rear tires.(That acid slowly does it's work until one day, you're on the highway and the line just bursts.)
I was insanely lucky both times that the catastrophic leaks both happened right before I parked somewhere, and saw the puddles before started off again.

Anyway, I tell you this only because some of the fuckers in the trades are just fucking evil. Your boss doesn't sound that bad...YET, but some fuckers have NO PROBLEM "creatively" making a problem go away.

There are PLENTY of better jobs out there, many of which have company vehicles for you to drive, if not better wages.

BTW, I have that exact lawn tractor.

Depending on where you live, being fired also makes you eligible for SNAP, food banks (like the grocery store but free), tech assistance (I replaced my laptop with a newer, better model for only $250), and even training benefits (you can choose a different career field and get paid to study it. In my state it extends unemployment benefits for an extra 6mo, and there are other programs to help pay for your gas, tuition, books, and other expenses.) There are stipulations with training benefits, it depends on what state you’re in and what’s in demand in your market, etc.

Being “low income” definitely has its perks.

Super extra bonus points multiplier: Keep track of all the illegal shit your employer does, then after you’re fired, go to your state’s BAR website and email employment attorneys. See if they’ll take your case on contingency, and you just might win a fat settlement from these cunts
