Is it sensible to pick up a trade in your late 20s, I've had a fascination with the construction field for a while and like the satisfaction of piecing things together.
At the same time I recognise I'm not really young anymore. My family is heavily advising me not to do it since they're saying a young guys game and my body will be finished by 40 and that I'll be delaying my life until I finish.

I'm looking at becoming a sparkie specifically.

It's a meme. Trades are for people who didn't do well in school. My instinct says that you will be gatekept out by the jailbirds that do a lot of those jobs. Go back to your office, rich boy, you don't want to be around guys like us. Do that stuff in your spare time.

I’m not rich. My office job is okay but I want to make my own money.

I guess I will never know because anons tfw no gf is more important.

Given that your competition is largely made up of unmotivated drug addicts who struggle to show up on time, it may actually play in your favor. Employers would rather take on someone a little older that can display a good work ethic than chance an investment in someone with no history and no idea of what they're actually doing there. The most important thing, not just in this but in every opportunity, is to never tell yourself "no"; if you really won't work out, don't worry, someone else will tell you. Until that point, just give it a shot. Worst case scenario, you'll have learned more than you know now and come away with some new skills and experience. Doubters will always find a reason to give you pause, don't base your decisions upon them. If you think a given path has something to offer you, then pursue it against all of the reasons not to, until it's obvious to YOU, not anyone else, that it isn't the correct move. The only time wasted is time spent not doing what you want to.

Thank you anon. This is what I believe as well and just the support I wanted to hear.
My fans saying to just invest in something easy like a tobacconist or a cake shop but I want to do relatively challenging things for their own sake. I feel as long as a I try hard enough, there’s money in all (practical) fields.

Nothing wrong with changing career later in life, late 20's is still young compared to the lifers you find in these jobs. As another anon said, you'll stand out compared to the junkies and dropkicks very quickly. Note that while you do an apprenticeship, you're going to be paid sweet fuck all, a lot of bosses will take advantage of you AND it lasts for years. If you can get through the entry process and you're good at your work, you can stand to make a bit of money if you're in the right sparkie field.

Also re your body, it's really not a joke when people tell you your body wears out. I've been a gardener (was at uni/working service industry prior) for about five years, am currently 32 and have moderately slipped a disc (needed work cover for this), rolled my ankle bad, got golfers elbow and inflamed a knee tendon, all within the last three years. None cause me day to day pain but all are essentially weak points that can easily get sore. I don't know how hard being a sparky is but make sure you look after yourself

Thanks anon.
I thought a mature age apprentice was payed decently. Not great, but better than the younger guys.
Sucks to hear that happened to you, I’ll keep that in mind thanks. I’m just worried about my back and knees, they’re fine now but they might be the first to go considering how common it is.
