I don't like it when people treat me friendly in one setting, and then in another setting they treat me like a complete stranger. They don't even greet me when I greet them and they avoid all attempts at me engaging with them like as if they don't know me, even though I've known them for a while.Why do people do this? It makes me feel like this world is built on superficial plastic relationships.

Same. I'd rather someone treat me badly all the time than only in certain settings. It let's me know who I should avoid

you're dealing with npcs. they don't react based on what's in front of them but based on arbitrary rules and conventions for interaction. they can't think objectively.

They dont have to pretend in the grocery store, as they never cared about you in the first place. You might have mistaken it for something more than plain and bare etiquette
