Is it possible to read books and still be dumb as shit? How is this possible? Aren't books supposed to make you intelligent?
>>34261962Only as good as the contents of the book and how they process the book cognitively
>>34261962Plenty of people read books without absorbing the material
If you asked me detailed questions about the content of a book I read 6 months ago, I would struggle to tell you anything useful.
>>34262100The fuck kinda nigger bookshelf is that?
>>34261962Thinking books will make you smart is like thinking going to college will make you successful. It's not about the fact that it was done, it's about how it was done. I can hand a retard a book and simultaneously send him to college, he might pass but not know what to do with it or have the social skills to find a job, then the whole time in college was a waste of money. And you can read books forever and ever and gather information but if you don't act on any of it - it's useless. So yeah, when people tell you to read books it's usually because they cope thinking that the act will save them but IN REALITY THEY'RE ESCAPING THE REAL PROBLEM which is entirely unrelated to reading books. People just afraid to admit to themselves the truth and it's tough.
>>34262127This nigger gets it
It depends on what you retain from it. You ever see those people who watch tons of anime but don't remember most of the details? They're reacting but not thinking. And it's the same with books. If it's just a plot that's designed to entertain you and kill time, then that time is killed. You need to be someone who actually examines and thinks about what he reads, someone who recognizes the patterns beneath the surface, who understands the themes and wants to think and talk about them. Incidentally, this makes it hard to grind multiple books in rapid succession because you need time to actually process what you're reading and have your mind wander and think before you move on. This also means what you're reading needs to have substance.
>>34262233I've seen niggers who read books with big words yet they still talk like niggers
>>34262325I mean you're talking to them and you're like how the hell are they able to rub two braincells together?
>>34261962This is like asking is it possible to drink water not be healhty.
>>34262343Is it? I see people who ONLY drink water if it has Kool Aid in it. And they're always snorting mucus up their nose.
>>34261962the sin of most bookreaders is that they can't do basic calculus therefore they can't understand the dialectical irony of 99% of published works
>>34261962>Aren't books supposed to make you intelligent? No, and nobody with a lick of intelligence ever said this. Reading books can increase your knowledge, but only if you are capable of understanding them. But reading books has nothing whatsoever to do with intelligence, whether you understand them or not.
>>34262381What is the difference between knowledge and intelligence?
>>34262406ANSWER ME FAGGOT
>>34261962Books only increase your verbal iq, nothing else
>>34261962It depends on the books you read.
>>34261962Books contain knowledge, not intelligence.
>>34262934answer my question homosexual>>34262406
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzpgqrzZ-KE
>>34262947Knowledge is informationIntelligence is the ability to understand that information and apply it to your situation
Yes and no.
>>34262962thank you homosexual you have now expanded my mind
>>342621046 months? Eh, try 6 minutes for me, lmao...
>>34262962So you could like graduate college with a business degree, and still do shit and fuck, while motherfuckers like Bill Gates could like, fucking, drop out of college and still be a successful business man with billions of dollars and shit, right? That's fucking intelligence, right? Mister homosexual, Sir? Saaar?
>>34262369I think people who drink "soda pop" are some of the dumbest people on the planet.
>>34263470My oldest brother is an example of a guy who sexually attracted the female employer so much he could a top position in a company. If your reality does not feel like a porno mixed with a story from a rap song, you're fucked in this real world. I'm a living example of what happens when society gave up on intellectual and creative pursuits. Fucking looked at me and behind my back called me a pathetic faggot who won't amount to much. Did the Oedpius Rex thing and made the theory come true since they said it so much. Fucked up the prayers of my family who wished I'd be somewhere in life.
>>34261962read dumb books, learn dumb shit
>>34263682The fuck? Your brother is Chad?
>>34263695Yeah but I see niggers reading smart books and still be dumb as shit.
>>34263698Yes. He got all the good genes. I got all the bad ones. People look up to him no matter what while people go the other direction with me.
>>34263705Yeah but those n****s need to stop being jealous of people like me all the time. They think they're gonna avoid trouble with the law if they were me. Fuck no, you're gonna be treated like a god damn murderer and rapist every fucking day. They may say oh but the elite will like me? If you are lucky. Black people have no idea how good their lives are for not being autistic they go around showing their guns all the time and listening to violent rap, but when they become me, fucking entire world zones in on them with scrutiny. And no unlike getting looked up for a gang banger you get seen as a desperate faggot if you were me.
>>34263791shut the fuck up namefag you never caught a body in yo life nor experienced what's it like to be a young black man in the projects
>>34263806Oh really you really think it's easy being me. You have no fucking idea how much of a drop off there is gonna be for me. You can fucking adapt. Once my parents die, I'm fucked on the streets. Babies irregardless of how loving their cradles are when thrown on the street fucking die from what's done to them.If you can't see how horrifying it is to mentally be an infant on the streets, you're really the rich one.
>>34263705I'd rather listen to hittaz in the penn who was reformed and personally mentored by the panthers than some no good crackkka who never had a gist of the collective trauma the black nation had, nor the inferiority complex latino immigrants have
There's gonna be a fucking dropoff point in my life African American anon, like a fucking Shakespearan tragedy. Go all rich with the kings and then gone with the kings and then I be a worthless autistic people avoid to leave to the roaches.
>>34263813nah I dont give a shit bout you timmy, when you gangbang you're just going to be another school shooter who can't grab the brass ring and make it but when we niggaz do it we finna make bread and paint the city red
>>34263705niggers can't read.
>>34263822mann shakespearan, blakean, faustian dosent matter, you gon learn EXPERIENCE what's it like to be a broke nigga and understand why some do what they do and den you realize that shit, this shit isnt about race black white brown but poverty and LOST opportunity
>>34263837how's life living in that ivory tower faggotrapunzel looking ass
>>34263822>African American anonkek
>>34263847kek
>>34261962If you just read the words as they are instead of trying to understand their underlying meaning, absolutely. Like reading Animal Farm and thinking it's just a weird fairytale for kids.
>>34263920>Animal FarmWhat is it then?
fuck orwell that demsoc revisionist bitch
>>34262406The same difference between>Having a shitton of bullets and a gunand>Having a gun but also the experience and skill to make the most effective use of the bullets you do haveYou may have more bullets in the first scenario, but a bullet that doesn't accomplish anything is useless. Yeah, it EXISTS, but it might as well not even be there. I can tell you in-depth trivia about anteaters and geode and that's knowledge, but it's useless in the vast majority of situations, even if I have the same amount of knowledge for 10000 other equally super-niche topics. And no, I'm not American, the gun analogy was just the first thing that popped into my head
>>34264030I'm American. It didn't even cross my mind where you were from. lmao.
>>34261962Look at the average liberal arts student and tell me
>>34263837ahem
>>34264175>diamond lettersI will never understand black culture. And I'm black myself.
>>34264195that's ice
>>34262100Why would anyone ever sort their books by color? What kind of organization scheme is that?
Yes. Source ? I have read around a hundred books a year but still am dumb as a sack of bricks.
>>34264371Probably the same person who would buy a shelf like that and funko pops
>>34261962>Is it possible to read books and still be dumb as shit?Yes.>How is this possible?Either what you read was garbage, or you read it with the wrong mindset. Study is for the sake of putting what you've learned into practice. If you're just reading so that you can say that you've read, then what you're doing is called pedantry and not education.
>>34262406knowledge is having the information that tomato is a fruit.intelligence is using a tomato in a veggie salad.
>>34266422I love veggie salads!
If all you read is fanfiction, smut and the golden sword of the dragon series or whatever then you might as well have been wasting your time playing video games or watching slop on netflix. The act of reading is not by itself virtuous (you're reading this right now in a website filled with dogshit btw), it's about the contents.
>>34261962there are good books and slop, like with everythingnot the same to watch one of those crude parody comedies of the mid 2000s than to watch author cinemawhen people told me they read I used to get excited when I was a kid because I thought they read the same stuff I was readingand no, it was always self help books or some technical books aimed at improving a craft or skill, not the brain, wisdom or general knowledgeso when people tells me they read I always ask what do they read first before upping my hype for meeting them.
>>34262127It's sad how many retards put themselves in debt by not knowing the difference. That's why I just quit college and started working, not cause I'm dumb but because I know I lack the serious nature to be in school and thus college is pointless to me.
>>34262406Knowledge is just knowing something, intelligence is putting it into practice. Knowing what a T rex is is Knowledge, knowing how to bring a T rex back to life is intelligence.
>>34268314how old are you anon?
>>34268316I am a T-rex... OM NOM NOM
>>34268286Jokes on you you motherfucking bitch! You just taught me what virtuous means :)
>>34268379Motherfucker
Uhhh, plenty of good replies to unpack - i'll try my best.>>34261967Maybe not even that - sometimes the book is really trashy, but the reader is actually smart enough to make connections beyond the material's insight and later i'll try to answer OP's question.Twilight and Harry Potter are two examples of seemingly innocent books that are mostly enjoyable by the mainstream folk.If the reader's attuned enough, it's possible to extract lessons about political theory, sexuality, author's insight and views about the world, etc. You get the idea. The reverse can be also true - which you already have outlined there.>>34262100Sometimes that's a good thing, as there are quite a few amount of trash there. Other times it might not make sense right now, because it is fermenting into (possibly) an "eureka!" moment. For me, Nausea by Sartre was completely indigestible and revolting. A few years later it finally started making sense and the pieces fell into place. This happens all the time in my life. Sometimes things are nonsensical now and that's ok.>>34262406Good luck answering that. We're still deeply stuck trying to litigate what the hell is intelligence, and when you put knowledge in the middle, that's even worse.I'd say: It doesn't matter what those things are. Trying to pursue them is a pointless endeavor. Why? Look around you - the world's full of ripe opportunities and activities. Why are we stuck trying to pin down something that's just... irrelevant for us?>>34263470Bill Gates came from a wealthy business family. Jeff Bezos and Zucc got lucky. For every Bezos & Zucc, you have a million failed guys. Sometimes spectacularly disastrous like Elisabeth Holmes and Sam Bankman-Friede>>34268294>SlopI haven't read books made by language models. Although, reading some of the texts generated by it is really grating, monolithic, simplistic and standardized. It sucks. It needs a complicated monkey touch. My Immortal fanfic is far more entertaining.
Finally, answering OP's question(s):>Is it possible to read books and still be dumb as shit? Some level of verbal fluency is required. And as soon as you accept and understand language - you're thrusted into this Lacanian world with all its complications. And you can't go back.>Aren't books supposed to make you intelligent?Does it even matter? Why do you want to achieve "Intelligence"? What is it that you're looking for in it that's transformative and impactful? Will it be any useful for you? Or the others?Lastly, if you start deliberating what acts and material counts as "intelligent", you'll be here all day getting in an ever-increasing complex and paradoxical maze of blabbery and pointless theories. If that's what you want, sure. Go ahead. Pick up a list of things to "enhance" your intelligent and pursue that path.I must warn you: Many have taken this way of living and felt bewildered, lost and lonely, endlessly questioning themselves and feeling ashamed/insecure about their own existence.Even the greek philosophers, which we associate with intelligence, are telling us: hey dumbass, philosophise this pussy and stop drinking wine and saying worthless shit all day. Go out there and live the world. You reap any fruits if the soil is sterile and uniform. It needs nutrients, imperfections, complications and the gamut of the human experience.
(You *won't* reap any fruits if the soil is sterile and uniform.) Sorry, often times i get too far ahead of myself and i eat up words all the time. It's ok to correct any of mine syntax/grammatical error or call me esl, it's whatever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯Feel free to skim it too, this is far too drudgery to go through. I think the general ideas are readable ( i hope )
>>34261962People that read a lot of books are some of the dumbest motherfuckers that have ever lived
>>34270287How? I'm curious...
>>34261962if you're one of those girls who only reads drama and smut yeah you're gonna be dumb. in fact the reading will make you dumber.
>>34271244Lol what? So is it like as if I was watching an episode of The Kardashians?
>Is it possible to read books and still be dumb as shit? How is this possible? Aren't books supposed to make you intelligent?GOOD books enrich the soul. Shit books are no different from scrolling Twitter or 4chan. And even if you do read good books, it depends if you're able to take the time to understand them and retain that information. You can do both by taking notes.
>>34271677How many fucking images of this frog and that school shooter are there? Holy fucking shit every time I come to this site there's a new variation of them.
>>34261962Depends on the book, books are sort of like TV shows, if you're interested in what you're reading, you'll remember it for life, if not, then you won't retain any of the info that you've read. Someone who really likes math for instance could read a book about math and remember the majority of the material they've read because they're interested in the subject matter, but if someone who doesn't like math reads that same book he'll be nodding in and out of sleep within 3 minutes.
>>34261962There are books for everyone, including books written by dumb people for dumb people. You won't get any smarter by reading dark romance smut novels.
>>34261962>Aren't books supposed to make you intelligent?no
>>34261962There's lots of book slop tho
>>34272728>You won't get any smarter by reading dark romance smut novelsWill I get any hornier tho?
>>34272778Depends on how degenerate you are
>>34272835Oh I'm very degenerate. Extremely even.
>Is it possible to read books and still be dumb as shit?yes, my mom has a literal wall with bookshelves stock full of shitty romance novels that are teh equivalent of hallmark movies and shes as close to being legally retarded without being legally retarded as one can get.
>>34261962go to >>>/lit/ and check for yourself. most of them are pretentious pieces of shit. they think themselves as smart, but in reality they are all fucking retarded.
>>34273748kek
>>34261962>Is it possible to read books and still be dumb as shit?Firstly define BOOK and define DUMB AS SHIT.Books are just a bunch of words. However this bunch of words did bypass some kinda filtering process (publisher approved or whatever) to enter the mainstream or the market etcNow, what is DUMB AS SHIT? What makes a human DUMB AS SHIT as opposed to neutral or even SMART AS FUCK?Likely the amount of constructive synaptic activity happening in the brain organ. Ok, but then what constitutes as CONSTRUCTIVE? What makes a "thought" DUMB AS SHIT, or SMART AS FUCK, or =NEUTRAL=?If a thought is simply had, and then it disappears forever, like a tree falling down in a forest with nobody to witness it... Did it really happen? It's good as nothing. So, it's what you DO with the thought - what actually happens, the chain reaction, the resulting formation that was instigated/initiated/engineered-into-existence by the thought/bunch-of-thoughts. Either good, bad, or neutral. But even good bad and neutral need to be pre-defined.So, books can make you dumb, smart or they can do nothing. Just depends on you, the book, and the reaction/synergy/cocktail resulting from you reading the book
>>34276958>Likely the amount of constructive synaptic activity happening in the brain organ.LMAO did you just get all ChatGPT on our ass Real Ass Nigga?
>>34261962They might improve your vocabulary but won't necessarily make you more intelligent.
>>34276976xDI talk to AI's everyday
>>34277026Anyway perhaps the better, more useful, smarter, more constructive, question to ask isWhat book and group-of-people/type-of-person/demographic combination yields what "cocktail", and then a value assessment judgement on whether that cocktail is good/neutral/bad and the logic behind that assessment
I have a theory: Your IQ makes reading books a valuable activity, not the other way around. So if you give a low IQ person some gem to read, it wouldn't matter. Also, seeking to be "le smart" is a futile and meaningless pursuit in of itself. There is more to life than just aptitude and being "le smart ape". You should instead focus on more meaningful stuff.
