I think you're already doing a good job. When my wife's dad was dying I took her to visit him as often as I could (was a couple hours drive) but I never stuck around to chat too much because I had to work on my laptop and I was already taking as many hours out of my day as I could afford.
I remember the last time I fucked off, he seemed very sad. I didn't know he was so close to the end. I suppose he would have liked to know me more. I'm not the type to really feel regret over stuff like that, since it wasn't a priority for my wife that I get to know him either. I know I should probably feel guilty over it.
What I suppose I'm saying is you seem like a good guy OP and you're doing a lot. I'm not sure there's any more you can do.

Just making sure he understands that you are glad to share the time with him that can be shared is a good start. You're doing great. Movies are good and all but I think it would be better to talk about what is important to him and ask what sort of things he wants to make sure get remembered.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys, I'm hoping that once we get him home from the hospital we can dig through old photo albums and I'll be able to help him wrap up some old projects. My next big endeavor is getting the man to drink a good cup of coffee, the stuff at the hospital is swill and I can tell he wants some but is hesitant to ask.

I personally agree with you, mushrooms helped me take perspective of my life and find a new direction when I was young and aimless but unfortunately I can't see it going well to suggest.

His earliest memories, his opinions on famous figures in history, his own memories of people now gone, his father, his mother, his opinions on his daughter and his advice for you, his wishes for his grandkids born, or not yet born.
Get him to read the newspaper, tell a few jokes, etc etc.

The reason is - we are entering the age where you might be able to recreate a simulation of his personality. Not now, not 10 years but in 30 years when you have kids, you might be able to do that. Ensure the video is on media that doesn’t degrade and 2 backups.

Your kids might meet their grandfather one day. If this sounds odd, I got laughed at for internet dating. Today? Everyone does internet dating. Things change, but your chance that you have now - priceless.
