My wifes dad has a few months at best, a few weeks at worst. My wife visits daily and I visit every chance I get when I'm not taking care of buisness for them or keeping our house afloat. We've watched a ton of his favorite movies and I try to get his mind off things and talk about his interests, we shoot the shit about life and swap stories the whole time I'm there but he's still very depressed. What would you do to comfort someone you care about on their death bed?
>>34265774Maybe it's normal to be a bit bummed.
>>34265774I would try to let them know that their work will continue.
>>34265774I think you're already doing a good job. When my wife's dad was dying I took her to visit him as often as I could (was a couple hours drive) but I never stuck around to chat too much because I had to work on my laptop and I was already taking as many hours out of my day as I could afford.I remember the last time I fucked off, he seemed very sad. I didn't know he was so close to the end. I suppose he would have liked to know me more. I'm not the type to really feel regret over stuff like that, since it wasn't a priority for my wife that I get to know him either. I know I should probably feel guilty over it.What I suppose I'm saying is you seem like a good guy OP and you're doing a lot. I'm not sure there's any more you can do.
>>34265774do you have old childhood videos of your wife? or family photos? I'd think he'd love to see those and reminisce, maybe you could learn some funny stories too
>>34265774>What would you do to comfort someone you care about on their death bed?Pillow on facePush
Just making sure he understands that you are glad to share the time with him that can be shared is a good start. You're doing great. Movies are good and all but I think it would be better to talk about what is important to him and ask what sort of things he wants to make sure get remembered.
>>34265774don't act as if he's gonna pass soon; read tibetan book of the dead for him
>>34265774Being depressed is the sane response to a depressing situation
>>34265774i know that this is a serious thread and all but i just can't NOT notice that picrel. like wtf kind of frog is that? i can't decide if it's cute or ugly as hell
>>34265839v>>34266021v>>34265879Thanks for the words of encouragement guys, I'm hoping that once we get him home from the hospital we can dig through old photo albums and I'll be able to help him wrap up some old projects. My next big endeavor is getting the man to drink a good cup of coffee, the stuff at the hospital is swill and I can tell he wants some but is hesitant to ask.>>34268093Pretty sure it's an African Rain frog, I get a kick out of weird looking critters and he summed up the vibe pretty well.
I think it depends greatly on his religiosity.
>>34265774shrooms or DMT anything that peels back the curtain I’m serious it will make him ready
>>34269751He has a VERY hard stance against drugs, lost a loved one to them. Hell, my wife wouldn't even let me meet her parents until I finished quitting weed (which was something I was working on before we met). I personally agree with you, mushrooms helped me take perspective of my life and find a new direction when I was young and aimless but unfortunately I can't see it going well to suggest.>>34268558He's been leaning into Christianity a lot more and it brings him some comfort, though I'm not a religious man myself so there's little I can do there.
>>34265774The biggest fear he has is that he will be forgotten. In time, he will, it’s true. You could set up a video camera and get him to tell his life. His earliest memories, his opinions on famous figures in history, his own memories of people now gone, his father, his mother, his opinions on his daughter and his advice for you, his wishes for his grandkids born, or not yet born.Get him to read the newspaper, tell a few jokes, etc etc.The reason is - we are entering the age where you might be able to recreate a simulation of his personality. Not now, not 10 years but in 30 years when you have kids, you might be able to do that. Ensure the video is on media that doesn’t degrade and 2 backups.Your kids might meet their grandfather one day. If this sounds odd, I got laughed at for internet dating. Today? Everyone does internet dating. Things change, but your chance that you have now - priceless.
