what's the problem? coding is a rote boring exercise. A means to an end. They both crashed out at me for making a webpage with chatgpt's help and one of them wants me to make one without it for some reason to prove something?

how are we supposed to know? we don't know your friends. we don't have their version of events

Because AI makes everyone able to create software and many coders see it as a bad thing. What is the "bad thing" in this situation really depends on your friends.

I personally don't like how many people call themselves "programmers" when all they do is prompting Claude and pasting unmaintainable code. So as long as you're not a poser, have fun learning new things!

Replace your friends with ai

Are they also working on the site? Normies that hate AI? Does the site suck?
What did they tell you it would prove?

You can read stuff to learn things and understand meanings. Try reading your friends' words carefully. Their messages are very likely to repeatedly mention the exact source of their discontent. Nerd rage is usually not subtle.

Or if reading feels too difficult you can just copy and paste your friends' messages into ChatGPT and ask it to understand for you. Lel.

I'll bite. I think their viewpoint can be expressed with the quote from Jurassic Park:
>If I may... Um, I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're using here, it didn't require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could
>Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.

If you don't do things yourself you never learn how to do it, and your can't correct the AI because you don't know what errors to look for. Programming's also a perishable skill, once you start farming your thinking out whatever ability you currently have will diminish.

You're right that it's a boring exercise, but 80% of anything complicated is the thinking and planning. And if you've done your planning right then the implementation is easy (and therefore boring).

Let me ask you; did you design the back-end for the page yourself and let the AI flesh it out? Or did you ask for the whole thing and accepted what it spat out?
