My psychologist and psychiatrist told me that I have depression and the latter prescribed me 20mg fluoxetine, but myself I am not sure whether I am depressed or if I am just extremely lazy and disillusioned with human existence. I'm also 18 so I am worried that taking the anti depressants might fuck my brain up long term. I told them about my lack of concentration and lack of interest in anything, and I hoped for an ADHD diagnosis instead. I'm currently in my last year of school and haven't stuided for months now I was usually ahead of everyone but now I am extremely behind in every subject, my grades are tanking but I still refuse to even open the books.
>>34320054Modern society is depressing and demoralising. Taking pills isn't going to fix that. Do what you can to improve your life and figure out what you want. Things can get better if you work on them. But recognise the instinct to medicate is a broken environment not a broken person.I would recommend not taking them and lifting weights instead. Btw, the SSRI pathway isn't even properly understood. It's just a model.
>>34320054Don't take it. There are actual ways of treating depression, ssri is not one of them.
>>34320054Man take two years off after high schoolSchool is a joke right now, you’d be learning more on the streetThe medication is designed to make you feel better but in a functional sort of way, it’s not designed to make you into your ideal version of yourself I was prescribed venlafaxine (snri) for similar stuff you’re describing and despite it’s supposed minor effects it messed me up a bit and affected my sex drive so I stoppedSince then I’ve made a lot of changes in my life and I’m feeling much better, in a few months I’ll even be running for local office in CaliforniaSociety is changing right now. There is no right path other than what feels right for you. Don’t worry about money. You can’t get back this time to figure things out and you won’t be able to pay for this perspective again.
SSRIs will help to fix the consequences of depression - they will allow you to get out of bed in the morning, shower, study. However, they will not tackle the root causes of depression: to fix this, you must look inwards and work on your Jungian shadow self.
>>34320054Two things:1) These adults are so fucked up in their lives and they've found the answer in SSRIs, that they are haphazardly prescribing them to 18 year olds. Change practitioners immediately.2) Depression is a symptom, not a cause, and only in psychiatry do professionals prescribe life-altering substances to treat symptoms.Get off SSRIs, you are way too young, and rather than treating your symptoms, find out why you are depressed. The solution is understanding, not even action. ACT, CBT, ERP and all these programs are practices that lead you toward understanding yourself, you don't actually need them if you don't want to, you can go on the journey yourself.Be fearless, be mindful, observe what's going on in you and have the goal of understanding yourself. Not changing, only accepting and understanding. Your emotions will regulate and your actions will reflect them accordingly.
>>34320054All you need to ask is, are the pills helping? If they are, keep taking them; if they aren't, stop. Don't overcomplicate it.
Don't take that shit at 18. Its likely your environment has conditioned you to believe you are the problem and what you're experiencing is normal. Try to find things/places that you notice make you feel good or stabilize you to function and take advantage of that.Ask why you feel the way you do and try to get a grasp of the causes. Not by looking for some external answer or hyper advanced psychology theory that's all modern bullshit to sell you something. Questioning alone will usually allow things to bubble to the surface and things will start to unravel on their own.Society doesn't give a lot of time to stop and let things process, and that's the point. To sell you SSRI's, endless therapy etc. They use your stressed or emotional state to convince you of all these complicated problems they come up with. Notice how they've been pulling more and more out of their asses since the 2010s?Your mind can plaster any story over your experiences, it will convince itself with its own logic. Calm yourself down, give yourself freedom to take your thoughts less seriously. Changing environments, who you're around, and what you interact with is far more effective than endless thought about your mental state.
Here is some Ancient Greek knowledge. In Ancient Greek times, depression was called "melancholy" which means "black bile".They considered depression to be a digestive issue, a build up of waste material in the digestive system which makes people slow, sluggish and unmotivated. The cure for this melancholy was to improve digestion by eating high fiber foods, hydrating more, and moving more to increase metabolism. Also they would take laxatives to help clean out the "Black bile"
>>34320629Youre a fucking retard
it's a big scam, ssris make people more impulsive and weird. trillions spent on them and society is still worse.
>>34320126>the SSRI pathway isn't even properly understood. While the mechanism of action of SSRIs is fully understood, they increase serotonin levels in the brain, which is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood.>>34320054OP, SSRIs take at least 3 weeks to start working. If I were you, I would wait that long to see if things improve or not. If things don't improve, you might need to see another psychiatrist and ask for a stimulant, such as methylphenidate, lidesxamfetamine, or Aderral.
>>34321904Yet he's correct
>>34320054I would kick them. Replace them with getting exercise every single day, a decent diet and stay 100% sober from alcohol and drugs. SSRIs suck. All they do is just numb you out but make it harder to heal from things or analyze your emotions and situation in order to make it better. They make you not give a shit. Eventually they will stop working due to tolerance and your 'doctor' will up the dose or add more meds and it's just a neverending shitshow. Psychiatry should be treated as a last resort. If you're about to jump off a bridge then by all means get on a cocktail of drugs but otherwise stay clear of it. If you lack motivation, there's really no easy fix other than to voluntarily choose to have it. If you can't find a reason to have it, realize that if you don't find one, life is going to be very dull, miserable and boring for you. Life is really short, best make something of it because you'll be 60 before you know it. Don't sit around waiting for a magic answer. Seize the day. Dream of something you really want to see manifested for yourself, plan step by step how to achieve it then start doing. Or sit around and pick your nose then die of old age or from a gunshot wound.
>>34322731You don't increase computer processing power by increasing the voltage. Modern neuroscience imaging models are based on blood flow to areas, that's like predicting a computer's processes from looking what areas become hotter. The goal of prescription is to return to function in a patient with negative symptoms (abolishment of activity). As long as you get out of bed and start working, it's enough, and they modulate this by destroying the mechanisms to feel sadness and happiness, which are two sides of the same coin more or less. The resulting anhedonia is what allows people to return to work and perform, the anhedonia is managed by telling the patient happiness doesn't exist anyway, and that he should not expect to find happiness in his life, only performance. You shouldn't take SSRIs unless you have deep depression, or if you have done a conscious effort to better yourself for many years.Honestly, the causes of depression are often imprompts from parents and schooling, the lack of mechanisms to tackle on adult life daily hurdles. Since these are social system symptoms, a psychiatrist can't help them, and often the person can't affect them either.
Thank you for all the responses, anons. I decided to stay on them for now in hopes that they would help. But if they don't, which is the most likely scenario, I will have to kill myself. The motivation to live will not come back on its own, and I see no reason to regain it anymore. There is nothing worth living for: no possible punishment or reward. Even if God is real, if heaven and hell exist, it will still not save me from wasting away. It might be next week, or next month, or even next year, but eventually I will take my life. And my death will be insignificant, like that of an insect. And it will be okay. Thank you again.
>>34325138If you take your life you just prove them right, they will say the things work but you wouldn't put the effort yourself.
>>34325138>lack of concentration>lack of interest in anythingSpoiler alert: SSRIs won't help.
