I'm getting an associates degree in maths at my local community college. is there any reason to finish this? Or any bachelors I can go for afterward that won't completely fuck up my life? I'm 32.
It can be useful. Still try to get a bachelor's though.
>>34326226THAT you get a degree tells employers you have some ambition and discipline. WHAT it is in matters a whole lot less. Only about 25% of college grads wind up working in the field of their studies
>>34326310I will, I just don't know what it should be in.I got laid off as a live-with-mommy wagie with 80k saved. The idea of throwing that all away to finally get a degree at the age of 32 scares me. I've only spent 2k so far and hope to keep it under 10k. But that's unlikely. So I really don't know what to do.
>>34328211Yeah and apparently the smart thing for you to do is suck the dick of the idea of not being humiliated, instead of going all in in making the best out of your life. True, not being humiliated would feel great, but it is momentary. And education especially in this economy will propel you forwards. If you can't see that but instead go to your douchebag friend who tells you the only way to succeed is bitcoin and selling drugs, you're acting like a generic idiot.
>>34328211Oy vey gevalt you didn’t fall for the propaganda telling you to leave your parents and live alone? Bad shabbos give me your 80k as property tax now
>>34328428Well my ex-girlfriend did fall for that propaganda, so I ended up choosing going back to college over being with her. I have a new girlfriend now but I still miss her. So I've already sacrificed for this stupid fucking degree, it better pay off.
>>34328222>And education especially in this economy will propel you forwards.I feel like I should be doing some gay grindset shit to make as much money as possible so it doesn't matter anymore. My brain is struggling to do trigonometric substitution integrals even though I understand it, my brain just sucks at the maths now
Math Major here, I can give you my 2 cents.First, associate degrees are made up. You think you’re gonna take up to calc 3 and call it a day? No, you need to get a bachelors if you want someone to hire you.You should ask yourself what job you actually want to get with a math degree. Many of my math classmates, including me, went into software engineering after college. Other people went into some shitty $80k analyst jobs. In my opinion, software engineering is the lowest barrier and highest return career for a math major. This is much easier than the many difficult tests required to becoming an actuary. And it’s much better to start working right after undergrad, as opposed to get a masters degree in “machine learning”.If you are like me, a full 4 years of undergrad will wipe you out. More school might be very hard for you at that point. The important thing to understand is that this is a life of constant self study. It will consist of long solitary hours looking at a book or a screen. Is that something you really want to do?If you want to put in the work, you can make $200k per year just like me. But it’s a long time commitment to get there. Good luck anon.
>>34332185>If you want to put in the work, you can make $200k per year just like me.What do you do?What kind of stuff comes after Calc III besides analysis?I know how to program a little bit (made an Asteroids clone in pygame when I was 18).I'm already getting fucked by just Calc II, I can do it, it just sucks knowing I used to be better about it. How much harder does it get?
>>34332288I am a data engineer
>>34332288>>34332929Math gets a lot harder after calc 3. Many of the things you do will be proof-based. Calculus is pretty easy because you are really just applying the same patterns over and over again. It gets harder in later classes since you actually have to be more creative in your solution. But remember, math is not immediately applicable anywhere. As a math major, you need to learn another skill on top of that. The most obvious choice would be programming. It sounds like you can code already, so you already got a great start.
>>34332948>>34332929I haven't programmed anything in 10 years. I still remember the basics but looking at my old code I'm too fuckign retarded to think of the solutions I did back then. I really think I fucked up choosing this major. I will probably finish this semester out and then give up. Only 2k down the drain out of my savings. After that I don't even know. But thanks for the advice I really needed to hear it. If I'm struggling with calc II and while I can occasionally think flexibly and come up with a "creative" solution I just don't have the spark of insight anymore. I also fucking hate programming.
One final bump for anymore advice.
I have an associates degree in math. Isn't it one of the most useful associates because you have all the required math classes covered for STEM degrees? I'm confused.
