Basically grind your resume: degree from a top college, extra curricular bullshit, code camps, hackathons, github commits, project portfolio, soft skills, etc. Obviously it depends on the position you're applying for, the quality of the other candidates and the state of the jobs market so preparing ahead by literal YEARS does not guarantee you success.
