Is there a resource that's at least somewhat scientifically-backed that goes over "rules" regarding consuming different kinds of alcoholic drinks?Saturday night, I got drunk for the first time in several months. I had a bottle of white wine, and then I had a couple of shots of Fireball (which I've never had before). I slept great, but I was absolutely miserable the following day. I spent several hours of the morning focusing on not throwing up, and even well into the evening, I'd feel my stomach occasionally lurch. I've never suffered so much after drinking! It absolutely wasn't worth it, and if that's what I have to deal with going forward, then I'd simply rather never drink again. So, I'm curious what went wrong. Was drinking liquor after wine the problem? I've never done that before. Was doing shots the problem? I haven't done shots in several years. Was Fireball the problem? I've had a lot of Jack Daniels Tennessee Fire with no issue, but I've never had Fireball. Was the sheer amount of alcohol the problem? I definitely got very drunk, but not overwhelmingly so. I've gotten a lot more drunk than that without blacking out, at least back in my 20s.Am I just getting too old to drink? I'm 35.I have a vacation coming up, and I had planned on drinking during it, but now I'm intensely wary of alcohol at all. I don't want to waste a whole day of vacation miserably recovering from a single evening of drinking. What should I do?
Hmm. If I were you I’d stick to craft beers>sober for 8 years
>>34365294I hate beer, unfortunately.
>>34365322Here’s what ChatGPT says:How to drink without wrecking the next daySet a ceiling • Stay ≤ 3–4 standard drinks total for the nightPace • Max 1 drink per hour, no shotsChoose lower-risk options • Clear spirits (vodka, gin) or simple wine • Avoid sugary/spiced drinks (like Fireball)Hydrate + eat • Water between drinks (1:1 is a good rule) • Eat beforehand (protein/fat helps)Stop early • Give your body 3–4 hours sober before sleep⸻If you want near-zero hangover risk • Cap at 2–3 drinks, spaced out, hydrated most people wake up fine⸻Bottom lineYou didn’t discover a bad “combination.” You hit: • high dose + fast intake + sugary/spiced liquor + lower toleranceChange those, and your experience will be very different.
>>34365333I always just drank one tall glass of water before going to bed. Helps keep hangovers away, and if it makes you puke at least you're puking when you're shit faced drunk and it won't feel as bad.
>>34365276It was probably mainly the sheer amount of alcohol. But there are other chemicals in alcoholic drinks that can make a hangover worse. As a rule of thumb, the darker the colour of a drink, the worse the hangover will be. So something like vodka is a bit less bad, as it's mostly alcohol and water; red wine and port are about the worst. An exception to this is beer, which is one of the least damaging options. It's important to stay hydrated; drinking water before you go to bed obviously means you won't sleep much, but definitely takes the edge off the next day; and taking 1000mg of Cysteine or Acetyl Cysteine before bed also helps a little.
>>34365276There's sayings but no hard "rules". Sugar + liquor does tend to make the hangover FAR worse for most people thou. Just experiment a bit and see what works for you. Some people don't get much of a hangover unless they're blackout drunk!
>>34365276It is about age for sure. Drinking at 18 was completely different than now at 25. You're like 40, drinking will affect you a lot.
>>34365276A couple of shots on top of an entire bottle of wine is a shitload of alcohol.Drink less next time. Drink more water, too. You went to bed dehydrated by the sounds of it.
>>34365276Alcohol is poison. Drinking more poison makes you feel worse than drinking less poison.
>>34365276Spare the dime, kiddo.Chemistry:>your liver converts alcohol into sugar and residual poisons that get you buzzedSobriety:>go from low to high alcohol>sparkles send it up your head>reversing the process sends it up your head>fresh air sends it up your head>activity burns it awayHealth:>intoxication is caused by toxins, and regular drinking builds resistance>eat juicy, fatty meat or if you're vegan, coat your guts with a tablespoon of cooking oil at least - it helps digesting alcohol>sweet drinks give you sugar, the alcohol hits later and heavier because your blood is already saturated>rehydrate after every other piss break with some water, or low-sugar soda>your guts can tell when you're done - if you feel like it'd be too much, you'll puke>have a spare sports drink for the next day, it helps you actually rehydrate with minerals>soup is also good, full of salt and vitamins which do the same thing as the sports drinkPersonal experience:>getting dead-drunk in a bad mood leads to shartpuking on the toilet>smoky or spicy spirits like whisky or bitters tend to also cause worse hangover than e.g. vodka or fruit brandy>there are people who handle low-alcohol beverages like champagne, beer or wine, while others are better with spirits - it's good to know which type you are
Not a regular drinker but used to have the worst hangovers with feeling sick and groggy. At some point just listened to friend who kept telling me that alcohol dehydrates you which is most likely the cause of it all.Ended up drinking at least half a bottle- full bottle of water after the alcohol and over the night and don't have those problems anymore.Drink water and pretend to be a fish lad
I know you said you hated beer but beer is good for hangovers because it's so much water. Also, more drinks per hour is more dangerous. I can drink 12 drinks over the course of a day and feel fine. But I can drink 6 drinks in a couple hours and it'll kill me the next day.Water is important. If you drink one glass of water for every drink, you won't get hungover. Food is important, too. Drinking on an empty stomach is fun, but not very helpful in the long run. Tip your bartender.
