I had to downsize my apartment by a lot, and had to put almost everything in a storage unit.
i was rushed when I moved everything in, and packed the entire floor space with 5' tall stacks of boxes. The ceiling height in that unit however is 10', so I want to stack everything up as high as I can and reclaim some space.
The cardboard boxes I'm using are already collapsing under their own weight, so I got some Pic Related totes that I think I stack all the way up.

So I'm thinking I will take it slower this time, and record what's in each tote using a spreadsheet. and use smaller "shoebox" totes stacked inside of the other totes for my really small or fragile things. and hopefully find some other items I can get rid of in the process.

What improvements would you offer on method? Have you been in a similar situation and how did you handle it?
How much time would you focus on making sure the totes are as full as possible by finding uniquely shaped things that fit together nicely?
Or would you categorize them based on what they're used for?

If you have to make a spreadsheet you have too much shit. Get rid of it. You're wasting money paying for the unit for shit you don't even remember you have.
I got a unit when I moved out of my place and moved back with my parents for the holiday and knew exactly what I had. Just keep them in 'kitchen' box, work box etc. and downsize to a minimum count of boxes per category. Sell your other useless shit.

It's not as simple as that. Back in the day you could drive stuff out to the dump and get rid of it. These days it's going to cost a lot of money.
Now could I simply stop paying for the unit and let them deal with it? maybe.
But also I have ambitions to move back into a larger space, and I don't want to have to re-buy dishes and stuff for when I have a sink again. (for example)

I did the math and in my area storage units actually cost more than NICE apartments on a per square foot basis lol. It made me want to invest in building some storage units but im too poor to get that done even thought they are just sheet metal you need like half a million bucks minimum to do it right

Sell it all or give it away on one of those buy nothing groups.
If you don’t need it in your house with you, you don’t need it at all.
