How would you protect your daughter from losing her innocence?My gf told me when she was in middle school other girls were trying to set her up to lose her virginity to some older guy, like an arranged hookup. People learn how to set boundaries for themselves the same way they learn anything else - through practice.The only to maximize good decision making in a child is two things : one, a COMPLETELY OPEN, judgement free and nurturing line of communication. Your child CANNOT BE AFRAID TO TALK TO YOU. If you respond with anger or insults or judgements they'll just continue whatever behavior they're experimenting with and not talk to you. Even if you disagree with their conclusions on things the only way to have any meaningful impact is to let them connect the dots between your advice, their actions and then the results of those actions. You can lead a horse to water but you can't but you can't make it drink, is the saying.The second thing is self-esteem. A kid needs to feel good about themselves. Peer pressure during adolescence is a hell of a thing. Kids do all sorts of things that are out of character simply because they want to feel like they're enough - they want people to like them. The only people who consistently set good boundaries are people with high levels of self-esteem. To know who you are, know what you want and know what you are worth is an incredibly empowering thing. Support and affirmation are a child's best friend. The only way they get comfortable saying no is if they have INTERNALIZED their worth. They have to know they are better. They have to have a strong sense of self.

In no way, shape or form am I advocating to just let your kid do drugs or sleep around or get in trouble if that's what they want so they can learn. Absolutely not. Kids often have to be protected from themselves especially if they have emotional/psychological issues which contribute to attention seeking and/or self-destructive behavior.Regardless, even in the worst case scenario, if your child feels like they can't talk to you without you getting upset or minimizing them or making them feel bad whatever they're struggling with they're struggle with alone. If your child isn't raised feeling like they're worth being treated well then they'll let people treat them like shit. Raising kids isn't a science and there's no perfect way to do it but providing the two things I've suggested is your best shot.
