I want to learn for reasons beyond watching chinese cartoons. I have a degree that can take me there for biological research which would let me stay there way longer than a few weeks. I also used to live there when I was young and I have a deep sense of nostalgia for the country and I want to rekindle that beautiful childlike wonder I had. I also love the high trust society they made

I have only taken two japanese classes and those were half a decade ago. I recently went to a store that had imported japanese products and while I forgot most katakana, I was able to recall all of the hirigana and a good bit of kanji

I know learning languages as you get older is hard and it's better now than never, but how disadvantaged would I be learning it now than I would have been if I was learning at 18?

My Gen X weeb father started learning at 44 and is now pretty good at it. The problem though is no matter how many lessons or theory you do you will never become fluent unless you actually apply it in a social setting. You will need to find someone who speaks Japanese that has the patience to walk you through it. There are a dozen online teachers that can do facetime call stuff if you don't know anyone locally or online thankfully.

I know it's cringe but I live nowhere near any Japan towns so I think I will try finding discord servers, VR chat rooms, and more online places where you get to mingle with people who speak Japanese. Ideally I would like to find groups near me with people learning or who are fluent but there aren't that many speakers in east north central US
