i'm tired of being a NEET. i want to move on with my life and was thinking of going back to community college. but i don't know what to do.

everyone talking about computer science talks about how they're unemployed or about how ai is gonna take their jobs. is it really that fucked?

the only other thing i like is illustration, but i can't make that my whole career, and i'm not sure if i want to. i'm interested in graphic design and filmography but again, i don't know if either can actually realistically get me a job. do you guys have any recommendations?

AI is replacing white collar jobs. Your best bet is going into a trade like plumbing or electrician or flooring or something kind of physical
>>
>>34400022
Survivalship bias or something like that, you're only reading the ones who didn't make it.
If you want actual answers, go on the websites, see the listings, see if you meet the requirements, see if it's feasible, see how many offerings they are, reach out to people on LinkedIn and ask them questions

It's a legit C-tier degree now, it's fucking impossible to get a job right now. Many of the new-grad jobs are going to Indians. AI has allowed one competent Sr dev to do the job of 4 mid level devs. Jr devs are basically useless for the first year of work, it's basically paid training. Programming is also really fucking hard. If you went into it in mid-2010s, my literal 90 IQ cousin got a job after one 12 week long bootcamp and she basically does nothing to this day. She pivoted to a lazy girl job that doesn't involve any programming. She admitted to getting hired and not knowing shit and she only got hired because she had a friend from college practically give her the job. You have to be beyond talented to even stand out in 2026.

You're better off going into healthcare (Nursing), but nursing fucking blows too. You'll be working with sociopathic overweight slut nurses all day who feel zero empathy for their patients and just want to see 100/hr on their paystub. Shit is looking grim. You basically HAVE to go to a career that actually has employment, otherwise you're wasting your time. The days of choosing a path you actually want to explore is over.

CS grads are unemployed because for at least 25 years every single college student in the world majored in CS and there just aren't that many jobs available, even before AI. Even with AI the best grads will always be wanted. It's the people with no real feel, talent or passion who just chose CS because it was supposed to guarantee a job who are in trouble.
>>
>>34400204
shit ok. that’ll definitely be me if i go into this. fuck. i kind of just want to go to school to feel better about myself but if that’s how it is i think i need to rethink
>>
>>34400328
You can feel better about yourself with an English or Philosophy (or whatever) degree, if you get it for fulfillment and not just as a road to a job
>>
How many of the people bashing CS in this thread actually have CS degrees? Something tells me they're full of shit
>>
>>34400022
this >>34400050

it's a good idea if you can actually trust/rely on yourself to lock in
>>
>>34400022
no, its a decent degree. a lot of CS are unemployed because they have no actual coding skills. they studied the degree with no plan and are shocked that nothing happened after they got the degree. while youre in college, try to think about what trade you actually want to get into. maybe you want to get into web development, or q & a, or cybersecurity, or IT. pick something and learn actual skills on the side and build projects. try to leverage that into finding internships. go to a job fair and try to impress them with knowledge checks you have of the industry. it will set you apart
>>
>>34400022
Yes it's a dead end degree, more like mathematics than it.
>>
>>34400022
AI isn't gonna take the job of anyone who is half decent. CS was undersaturated because it was new. Now there are tons of CS grads, startup economy is gone, and the AI is making everyone a x2-3 dev because it lets you look up stuff faster, still does dumb stuff all the time if you let it do blocks of code. If you legit want to autismo into CS, you're probably good.

>>34400140
Programming is piss easy, just boring for most people. I'd rather plumb all day than sit there and iron out a system. Too bad plumbing doesn't pay as much.

>>34400328
Go figure out what you want to do day to day. Do it, save money, enjoy little things. Then start own business, day trade, whatever. I got into CS because I am >>34400204 and I have a job and it's supposed to be hard but is easy (Rust low latency) and it's still hell just because it's so boring for my personality.
>>
>>34402573
This.

Computer science is great if you have a real passion for it because you will rise above the mediocrity. If not, then you will have a very difficult time finding or retaining a job because the market for computer science related jobs is currently oversaturated.
>>
Hey I made a thread kinda like this yesterday.
I like CS but I figure I'm gonna have better luck if I try to get into Electrical Engineering
>>
>>34402905
Programming is genetic
>>
I'm doing a BS in CS right now and thinking about doing a graduate degree in astronomy. I'm terrified that I've been wasting my time this whole time.
>>
>>34404225
>I'm terrified that I've been wasting my time this whole time.
how so?

i think your odds of a stable career are much higher with a CS degree than astronomy, all else being equal
>>
>>34404264
I've been in and out of school for years now. I'm terrified that when I'm finally almost done, I won't be able to land anything.

Been fascinated by deep space ever since I was a kid. I don't know, it made sense to me.
>>
>>34404277
>Been fascinated by deep space ever since I was a kid. I don't know, it made sense to me.
yeah but there's a difference between astronomy for astronomy's sake & astronomy as a career
the latter will probably involve a whole lot of non-astronomy bullshit & dealing with people
if i had to guess...

either way is a good idea though, just stay in school and finish one or the other
you'll be better off than if you hadn't gone to school for sure
>>
>>34400022
Really depends if you are american or not. I'm european, and while the market is experiencing some turbulence, every single market right now is experiencing turbulence. I mean christ, here in Denmark we have medical doctors who can't find work because of shortage

Listen, times are tough right now. While that may be true for some fields more than others, every market will feel the upciming recession soon enough. You need to think about the future right now. We are just in the very beginning of the digital age, and being able to program on a very low level is going to be extremely valuable compared to most other skills. Go chase that degree man
>>
>>34404300
Dealing with people sucks but I can take it or leave it depending on who I'm talking to.
>>
>>34400022
It's sad brother. I feel you. But don't feel so disheartened. If you really like one area, your best bet is usually just doing it without letting fear take over you.
If you want to program, then be a programmer, make games and software, or whatever you decide. If you REALLY want to get into art, then dive into it, get involved and perfect your skills.

Truth is, no one really knows what the future will hold, so I think doing what you actually enjoy doing is one's best bet.

>>34402905
I agree with >>34403652. Programming is either something almost obvious and natural to you, or something that you can't get into at all. I studied medicine, biology, biomedicine, some stuff that is often considered super complicated by some, but to me it was simple enough, but I've tried to learn programming in 3 separate occasions, and in all 3 I had trouble learning.
>>
>>34402905
>>34403652
>>34404387
This isn't true. Programming wasn't genetic for me by any means and while I'm no expert, by this point I'm far, far better than your average programmer just starting out. Which I suppose isn't saying much but I definitely know data structures, including binary trees, a bit about graphs (admittedly a bit of a gap), some basic stuff about how the heap works, time and space complexity, yada yada yada. And I had to study hard for that shit because it didn't come naturally at all.
>>
>>34404387
it’s the uncertainty that makes me unable to act at all. whenever i think about it this much, i really do want to get into art. my then i overthink myself out of it. idk how to give myself permission to pursue what i want
>>
>>34404422
I totally understand it man. I also loved art, and I still do, but unfortunately I chickened out and sought other stuff for convenience when I was young... but now, years later, personally, I regret it.

>idk how to give myself permission to pursue what i want
I get this, I really do. It felt wrong to me to do something I liked when other people expected more of me... but at the end of the day, I think you gotta do what you feel like doing the most, what brings you the most joy and self-fulfillment.

It's a bit cliché, but I think that if you truly enjoy what you do, if it makes you willing to fight for it, to seek self-improvement and all, the rest will come. Even if you feel tired, even if you have to spend night after night working, you will feel accomplished for succeeding in the thing your heart desired. It'll be a battle you won, by giving your blood, sweat and tears.

Don't worry about family and stuff too much. The truth is they just want you to be happy and fulfilled, no matter what career you end up with. This is something that took me years to realize, but I feel like it is the truth for most families.

Only you can really tell what is it you truly desire, though.
I honestly wish you good luck in your pursuit, anon. I do hope things go well brother, no matter what you decide to do.

about as many as are actually in the trades recommending tradie jobs

yes let's go from a job where you're never hired without 5YOE to... another field where you're never hired without 5YOE

this board is all 19 year olds repeating things from reddit
>>
>>34404264
>i think your odds of a stable career are much higher with a CS degree than astronomy, all else being equal
thing is this is true for most every degree! medicine is better off, engineers and lawyers in many places are better off... but cs is still one of the only fields actually growing jobs. any other STEM degrees are even worse off than those i mentioned, and humanities are totally cooked
>>
>>34400022
the faang $375k TC thing your auntie talked about when you were in middle school is not gonna happen

the $96k thing where you do django and JavaScript for your local tax firm that needs to reconcile b2b indirect tax reports still exists. still better than 99% of jobs out there

i'll keep this in mind

i hope to go to college but idk how i'd pay for it :/
and i'm afraid of getting a loan, only to drop/flunk out, and end up at square one WITH $50,000 of debt
might have to make some money first
