I've watched a lot of fucked up shit before and while more graphic stuff definitely exists what made Oz so fucked up was the vibes and desperation of the characters. There was death and rape all over the place and nothing worked out right for any of the characters. They were all fucked from the beginning just for being in that maximum security prison. A lot of the characters were excessively cruel for no reason. Even characters who were massive assholes elicited some sympathy when they were raped or tortured because the characters raping/torturing them were even bigger assholes than they were and sometimes the punishment exceeded the crime.
