How does a person "find themselves" or figure out who they are? I feel like I don't know who I am and never have. 23 years old and lost. I need to figure this out before I can move forward with my life.
>>
read atomic habits
figuring out who you are is part discovery and part choice; it's true that there are some innate, subconscious aspects about one's behavior, but it's also true that actions also stem by conscious choices, and conscious choices repeated in time eventually ingrain in your personality and become a part of your identity as habits

>How does a person "find themselves" or figure out who they are?
If you're a woman, having casual sex with a lot of men is the method.

There's only one ideal, so everybody has the same "true self". It's not as if there's somebody who's "true self" is to be a selfish, grating, overbearing tyrant. Everyone is born into this world with the innate moral obligation to become kind, generous, compassionate, selfless, honest and patient. That's your and everyone else's true self, and the challenge comes from embodying those traits to the point of perfection.
>>
dont stress about it, identity or self is something peoople have made up, the same way they made up a meaning. People search for the meaning of life or "who they are" like if it was inherent to reality while it doesnt really exist beyond a thoughtout concept
>>

to elaborate, an idea of "true self" >>34445296 for example, its made up.

Good character and conduct aren't made up, they exist objectively. But good character and conduct are the result of self abnegation, meaning removing all thoughts of "self" and "identity" and simply doing what's right independently of any conception of identity. So in that sense you're correct and we agree, everyone's "true self" is actually "no self". No one should be worried about their identity, they should just focus on being good.

you mixed up the senses of selfless and missed my point entirely, you fixate on being "good" and doing "right" while you tie the notional identity or character to it (which, the identity, was your sense of selfless - ironically). Im denying the inherent existence of identity altogether, there is no identity or meaning until you make it up. "Objectively good character and conduct exist" is funny.

There's nothing to find.
>>
A lot of you say it doesn't exist. What is that about?

How do I figure out who I am?
>>
>>34446672
You're a human being. The only question that really matters is whether your conduct is good or bad. Meditate every day on what you did well, what you did poorly and whether your motivations were selfish or selfless, and you'll come to know yourself in time. A person is made by their moral qualities, not by anything incidental like their favorite food or color.
>>

you are really sticking to the script. Beware of cults, they might be your weakness
>>
>>34446672
I'l tell you who you are: You are a retard.
>>
>>34445263
finding yourself is a myth and a western luxury.
the less of the "self" you are concerned about, the closer you'll know reality, and the more easily you'll havigate the world.
there is a book called "the surrender experiment" i think you'd find interesting.

The answer to your question: "How do I find myself?" is:
Seek, and you will find.
I also recently turned 23 and just figured this out. Luckily for you, I can tell you who you are. YOU ARE A LIVING, BREATHING, WALKING, SPEAKING, STAR!!!! We are the children of the most High.

Things will become effortless and fall into place naturally when this occurs. It's true will. When you're following it, the universe will help you with everything.
