I feel deep discomfort around people. I'm not comfortable even with people I know well. Since I don't get anything out of social interactions (other than unease) I avoid people and spend almost all my time alone. I'd really like to overcome this I just don't know how...how can I make myself actually enjoy being around people?

Sports team, volunteer work, class, job, etc. What you're doing together automatically gives you something in common and a subject for conversation, and the doing can cover any pauses in the conversation
