I feel deep discomfort around people. I'm not comfortable even with people I know well. Since I don't get anything out of social interactions (other than unease) I avoid people and spend almost all my time alone. I'd really like to overcome this I just don't know how...how can I make myself actually enjoy being around people?

Put yourself in situations where you are DOING something in the company of others also doing it. Sports team, volunteer work, class, job, etc. What you're doing together automatically gives you something in common and a subject for conversation, and the doing can cover any pauses in the conversation
