Go to church to get saved or hear the sermon, but understand that any "community" after that only wants men for the purpose of labor. They don't want (you) they want a guy to help out with x. They have no intention of reciprocating that behavior either

Why concern yourself with looking weird? Others finding you weird (in a bad way) is a good filter for you to use. You can immediately eliminate them as your potential "friends" and move onto the next bunch.

As for free social events or activities where you can make friends easier as a lone person. Depends what you mean by make friends. What's a friend to you? Because you are free to talk to anybody out there, and engage in a back and forth, but who will actually stick? And what's the glue that makes you both stick? Who the hell knows, it depends on what you actually want friends for.
