So I found this Instagram comment saying that Medieval Europeans killed cats en masse, which helped the spread of the black death. This was from this anti-colonial reel talking about how Europeans destroyed nature and indigenous societies had scientific advancements before Europeans. For the record this commenter claims to own a degree in medieval studies, but I honestly just see them as a white man bad/other civilizations good echo chamber.Now, I'm not a big history nerd, but one of the things that I am passionate about is debunking misconceptions of the Middle Ages. Not to the extent that I deny of the existence of a dark age. One of those points is the idea of the fact that they killed cats en masse in suspicion of witchcraft, due to a decree that Pope Gregory IX established. He isn't impartial and he's not capable of being impartial, so nothing he thinks or does matters. There's no sense in trying to convince somebody who's committed to his own ignorance, but correcting his error in public view for others to see is a good deed that rewards itself. Just don't get personally invested. State the facts and leave them at that. Truth has its own motivity and it doesn't need you to personally guard it.
