How bad is the racism against Indians (South Asians) in Canada right now? I might have to travel to Québec for some research thing. Obviously I have no intention of working/living there. But I'm still very scared, even if it's a temporary thing. I have a friend in Kitchener who grew up there so he has a Canadian accent, but he's afraid to even go outside the house because of the level of racism. I spoke to some professors in Québec, they know that I'm Indian, but they were still polite and friendly. I'm confused about what to do.

I'm south asian, lived in Canada most of my life. I don't face that much racism. Never been threatened by anyone for my race even when I lived in a rough neighborhood. As long as you have a proper etiquette you won't get in trouble. The number one mistake I see brown FOBs make is that they still act like they are back home like littering in public spaces, staring at strangers and being loud for no reason.
I wouldn't worry too much friend. Racism is placed front and center on social media but in reality other than snide remarks from cowards too afraid to actually raise the hands you wont experience much in the way of racism. People have a way of generalizing others online and then deferring to individualist takes when they meet someone they claim to "Hate" in real life. The truth of the matter is Prejudice is going to be found in every corner of the world, but it simply exists on the fringes of most 1st world countries as the actual racists are far too afraid of the repercussions of being perceived as racist, the stigmatization of prejudice is still very strong with most westerners.
