Is it literally just impossible to reintegrate into society as an adult? i dropped out of high school and even though I've worked on my social skills a lot, I've never made a single friend offline. people seem to get a positive impression of me but everything comes to nothing again and again.

Might just be a case of finding the right people... Since you do have social skills, I think it's mostly a matter of time until you do.
Even me, who is terribly afraid of speaking with people, manage to make friends here and there.
