Gfs are generally more useful than dogs if you know what you are doing.

If you want a dog you can get your gf to get a dog and put all the responsibility of caring for it on her but just enjoy playing with it

If you get the right kind of cute dog it could attract a girl and you can have both. A scary looking dog will be a better dog though. I miss my dog more than any girlfriend I had if that helps idk.
